KRAKEN CS

Inspiration

As a bunch of high schoolers who are getting ready to join society, the first step to it is getting a job. Job allow people to interact with others and learn about their own strengths and weaknesses. This is inspired us to get some jobs, but we have to make a resume first. Many websites online help automatically format resumes and make them look clean and presentable. However, these websites dont help with the actual information that attracts employers to look at you more thoroughly. That's when an idea struck us. We could make a website that can help future generations write their resumes with appeal and help them take their first step into joining society.

What it does

ResMe is a resume suggester that collects information that you put into it to compile a list of strength that can help you succeed at the career you chose. It has a sorting feature that takes all your past jobs and sorts them into related fields for future use. Once you have a company that peaks your interest, use the advisor tab to automatically give you points to put onto your resume. These specific points can help you seem more fitting for the job and hopefully land you that interview!

How we built it

We built ResMe using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. HTML helped us structure the different sections of the website, CSS was used to design the layout, colors, buttons, and cards, and JavaScript made the site interactive. Since we only had basic experience with JavaScript, we also used ChatGPT to help guide us with parts of the code, especially when connecting buttons, forms, tabs, the demo feature, and displayed results.

Challenges we ran into

One challenge we ran into was JavaScript, since it was harder than HTML and CSS. We had to connect buttons, inputs, tabs, and results together, and sometimes one small error would break a feature. To understand and fix some parts, we used a bit of ChatGPT and online resources for help. We also had to test the website many times to make sure everything worked smoothly and the design stayed simple for users.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we created a working website that's easy to use. Even though we ran into coding problems, we were able to finish the main features and make the project look presentable. We are also proud that our idea solves a real problem for students who may not know what to put on their resume.

What we learned

We learned more about how HTML, CSS, and JavaScript work together to create a full website. We also learned that JavaScript can be difficult because one simple mistake can stop a feature from working. This project taught us how important testing is, and how much problem solving is involved when building something interactive.

What's next for ResMe

In the future, we would like to improve ResMe by making the suggestions more accurate and helpful for different jobs. We could also add a save feature so users can keep their achievements and update them later. We hope ResMe can become a more useful tool for students applying to their first jobs.
