Inspiration

Modern research and technical innovation often happen in isolation. Brilliant minds, students, and engineers struggle to find the right collaborators, showcase their ongoing projects, or communicate in real-time without juggling dozens of fragmented tools. We were inspired to build ResearchMate to bridge this gap—creating a unified ecosystem where innovators can connect, present their research portfolios, and collaborate seamlessly through built-in real-time messaging and video support.

What it does

ResearchMate is a modern web platform designed for researchers, engineers, and innovators to showcase their technical projects, build professional profiles, discover peers, and collaborate seamlessly. It features dynamic user profile pages, project filtering, and an integrated real-time chat system with video message support.

How we built it

Frontend: Built using Next.js (App Router) and React with TypeScript for robust type safety and optimized client-server rendering. Styling: Designed with Tailwind CSS to deliver a responsive, clean, and modern user interface. Backend & Auth: Powered by Supabase for secure user authentication and relational data management. Deployment: Hosted and deployed via Vercel with continuous integration.

Challenges we ran into

Migrating from legacy server configurations to a modern serverless architecture while ensuring smooth authentication flows. Handling dynamic routing for user profiles (/users/[id]) and synchronizing local data with backend database structures. Implementing rich media features, specifically handling video uploads and playback within the custom chat interface.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Successfully engineered a fully responsive platform featuring custom profile management, project portfolios, and a Telegram-style messaging interface with video upload capabilities. Achieved seamless integration between Supabase Auth and frontend components using clean, maintainable TypeScript code.

What we learned

Deepened our mastery of Next.js App Router dynamic segments and client-server component boundaries. Gained hands-on experience implementing secure authentication and database workflows with Supabase.

What's next for ResearchMate

AI-Powered Insights: Integrating smart summarization tools to automatically generate abstracts, key takeaways, and research briefs from shared project papers. Group Workspaces & Team Collaboration: Scaling beyond 1-on-1 chats to support multi-user research groups, shared task boards, and collaborative document editing. Advanced Real-Time Tools: Expanding the messaging system with threaded replies, voice notes, and file-sharing capabilities for code snippets and datasets. Global Discovery & Recommendation Engine: Implementing smart peer-matching algorithms based on technical tags, scientific domains, and research interests to connect innovators worldwide.
