ResearchGPT

Accelerating ideas with AI

⸻

Inspiration

Modern research is expanding exponentially, yet discovering innovative interdisciplinary ideas remains difficult. Researchers spend enormous amounts of time analyzing papers, identifying gaps, and connecting concepts across multiple domains.

We observed that many revolutionary breakthroughs emerge when technologies from different fields intersect. However, manually identifying these connections is inefficient and complex.

This inspired us to build ResearchGPT, an AI-powered platform designed to accelerate research innovation through intelligent idea generation.

Our vision is represented mathematically as:

$$ Innovation = Knowledge + AI + Interdisciplinary\ Connections $$

We believe the probability of impactful research increases when intelligent systems help researchers explore cross-domain opportunities.

⸻

What it does

ResearchGPT helps researchers generate innovative and interdisciplinary research ideas from simple keywords or descriptions.

Users can:

  • Enter research concepts
  • Generate ranked combinations
  • View AI-generated explanations
  • Explore related technology fields
  • Access recent generation history

For example:

AI, Blockchain, Healthcare

can generate:

  • Decentralized AI healthcare systems
  • Blockchain-assisted federated learning
  • Explainable AI for diagnostics

The ranking score for generated ideas is calculated conceptually as:

$$ R = \alpha T + \beta I + \gamma P $$

Where:

  • R = Final research relevance score
  • T = Trend alignment
  • I = Innovation potential
  • P = Practical applicability
  • \alpha, \beta, \gamma = Adjustable weights

⸻

Mathematical Foundation

ResearchGPT combines NLP, semantic analysis, and ranking algorithms.

Semantic Similarity

To determine how closely related two concepts are:

$$ Similarity(A,B)=\frac{A \cdot B}{|A||B|} $$

This cosine similarity helps identify meaningful interdisciplinary relationships.

⸻

Idea Generation Function

The generated research combinations are modeled as:

$$ Generated\ Ideas = f(Keywords,\ Trends,\ Domain\ Relationships) $$

Where:

  • Keywords represent user input
  • Trends represent current research demand
  • Domain relationships represent semantic connections

⸻

Research Impact Estimation

Potential impact is estimated conceptually using:

$$ Impact = \frac{Innovation \times Feasibility}{Complexity} $$

This helps prioritize ideas that are both innovative and realistically achievable.

⸻

Trend Weighting Model

Current technology trends influence ranking through:

$$ TrendScore = \sum_{i=1}^{n} w_i \cdot t_i $$

Where:

  • w_i = Importance weight
  • t_i = Trend relevance value

⸻

AI Confidence Score

The confidence level of generated combinations is estimated as:

$$ Confidence = \frac{Relevant\ Matches}{Total\ Matches} $$

Higher confidence indicates stronger semantic relevance.

⸻

Future Prediction Concept

Future research direction modeling may follow:

$$ Future\ Innovation = AI + Knowledge\ Graphs + Predictive\ Intelligence $$

⸻

How we built it

We developed ResearchGPT as a full-stack AI-powered web application.

Frontend

  • Tailwind CSS
  • Responsive user interface

Backend

  • Node.js
  • Express.js APIs

AI & Processing

  • Natural Language Processing (NLP)
  • Keyword extraction
  • Semantic relationship mapping
  • Trend-aware ranking engine
  • AI-generated contextual explanations

Storage

  • Session/local database storage
  • Maintains the latest 3 history sessions automatically

⸻

System Workflow

  1. User enters keywords or descriptions
  2. NLP extracts key concepts
  3. Semantic analysis identifies relationships
  4. AI generates interdisciplinary combinations
  5. Ideas are ranked based on relevance
  6. Results are stored in history

The workflow can be represented as:

$$ Output = NLP(Input) + Semantic\ Mapping + Ranking\ Engine $$

⸻

Challenges we ran into

One of the major challenges was ensuring that generated combinations were meaningful rather than random keyword mixtures.

Initially, many generated outputs lacked:

  • Contextual understanding
  • Practical feasibility
  • Research relevance

To solve this, we improved:

  • Semantic relationship mapping
  • Trend-aware scoring
  • NLP-based concept extraction

We also faced challenges in:

  • Handling ambiguous inputs
  • Avoiding repetitive suggestions
  • Maintaining scalability
  • Designing intuitive UI/UX

Another challenge was balancing:

$$ Innovation \approx Practicality $$

Highly innovative ideas are often difficult to implement realistically.

⸻
