Inspiration
Food waste remains a major challenge while many NGOs and community organizations struggle to secure enough resources to support people in need. We wanted to create a platform that simplifies food donation and helps ensure surplus food reaches organizations that can use it effectively instead of being wasted.
Rescue Chain was built to make food redistribution more organized, transparent, and impactful through smart technology and intuitive workflows.
What It Does
Rescue Chain is a food donation management platform that connects food donors with NGOs through intelligent matching and streamlined logistics.
Donors can create donation listings, manage active donations, track claims, and monitor completed distributions through a centralized dashboard.
The platform includes an AI-powered NGO matching system that recommends organizations based on demand levels, food requirements, and proximity. This helps donors quickly identify the most suitable recipients for their donations.
Rescue Chain also provides pickup scheduling, logistics tracking, notifications, and impact metrics to keep donors informed throughout the donation process.
How We Built It
We designed Rescue Chain around a dashboard-driven workflow that makes food donation simple and efficient.
The system consists of several key modules:
Donor Dashboard
Provides an overview of:
- Active donations
- Pending claims
- Completed donations
- Meals provided
- Recent activity
Donation Management
Allows donors to:
- Create donations
- Manage existing listings
- View donation status
- Track expiry information
Smart NGO Matching
Uses multiple factors such as:
- NGO demand levels
- Food category requirements
- Distance from donor
- Priority levels
to recommend the best recipient organizations.
Logistics & Routing
Provides pickup scheduling and routing information to improve coordination between donors and NGOs.
Notifications
Keeps users updated about:
- Donation claims
- Upcoming pickups
- Expiring donations
- Completed distributions
- System updates
Challenges We Ran Into
One of the biggest challenges was designing a workflow that balances simplicity with functionality. Food donation involves multiple stages, including listing, matching, claiming, scheduling, and completion tracking.
Another challenge was creating meaningful NGO recommendations while considering factors such as demand, proximity, and food requirements.
Designing a clean dashboard that presents all this information without overwhelming users also required significant iteration.
What We Learned
Throughout the project, we learned:
- Dashboard and workflow design
- Building systems for real-world social impact
- Managing complex user interactions
- Designing recommendation-based features
- Improving user experience through data visualization and tracking
Most importantly, we learned how technology can help solve practical community challenges by making resource distribution more efficient.
Impact
Rescue Chain helps reduce food waste by creating a structured pathway between donors and NGOs.
By improving visibility, coordination, and matching, the platform increases the likelihood that surplus food reaches people who need it rather than ending up as waste.
The impact can be estimated as:
[ Meals\ Provided = \frac{Food\ Donated}{Average\ Food\ Required\ Per\ Meal} ]
Every successful donation contributes to reducing waste and supporting communities.
Future improvements include:
- Live map integration
- Advanced route optimization
- More intelligent matching algorithms
- Mobile application support
- Expanded analytics and reporting
- NGO verification and trust systems
Our vision is to build a smarter food redistribution ecosystem where every surplus meal has the opportunity to reach someone in need.
