Inspiration

Angela As someone who doesn't work out that much, I realized that I need to prioritize exercise more in my life. However, I often find it hard to stay motivated, and I get bored doing the same routine every day. That's why we came up with the idea of an app that would make outdoor exercise more exciting and engaging. With this app, I could challenge myself with new routes and feel a sense of accomplishment with each completion. It also helps that I could compete with my friends in a fun and friendly way without feeling intimidated or discouraged by their different fitness levels. This way, I can stay on track with my fitness goals and have a good time doing it.

Chloe Even as a Seattleite who's been in the city for 10 years, I always find new, interesting places. The Seattle culture fosters exploration and spontaneous adventures. My friends and I share a common love to spontaneously explore the city alone. We call them self-dates. My favorite spots that I've found while walking more challenging walks around my neighborhood are a hiking trail (that my dog also loves), a blackberry bush (that I've eaten probably $50 worth of blackberries off of), a neighborhood tabby cat (that my dog doesn't love as much), and a Little Free Library. As someone who has set many fitness goals, I found that the issue was that I was setting goals with extrinsic motivations: I want to lose weight, I want to burn more calories, I want to look less bloated. I learned that those these motivations are "popular", they do not work in the long run. Long run motivations include affiliation and more intrinsic motivations. My intrinsic motivated goals now look like: Going on a walk after sitting all day working, walking to class instead of taking the bus, and finally mustering enough courage to try that new fitness class my friend invited me to. I wanted to help others have more intrinsic motivations to achieve a more healthy, long-term, effective approach to fitness in a manner that is new and exciting every day.

Ji Yoon The inspiration for this app came from the desire to make exercising a fun and social activity, and to encourage people to explore their local surroundings in a new and exciting way. We wanted to create an app that not only provided users with a daily workout plan but also offered a sense of accomplishment and community through friendly competition and engagement with friends. We believe that by making exercise more enjoyable and rewarding, people will be more likely to stick to their fitness goals and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

What it does

Reroute supports people of all fitness levels to exercise outdoors with intrinsic motivations and friendly competition.

Reroute challenges users with 3 new routes, 1 of each level of expertise, daily. Upon completion of a route, the user is awarded with a +1 streak score and mileage, which is used to create a leaderboard made up of the user and a group of friends of their choosing. The streaks meets user’s intrinsic needs while the mileage meets the user’s extrinsic needs. The leaderboard of streaks and mileage encourages, affiliate motivation, reinforcement, accountability, and social support. Reroute allows users to progress in their fitness journey with their friends without feeling intimidated and discouraged by the different fitness levels of others. By eliminating calories, time, and elevation from the leaderboard, users are able to focus more on outdoor exploration and just the simple fact that they got a good sweat in.

How we built it

We used Figma to build an app that addresses the needs of our target audience. We started by researching to understand our users' pain points, goals, and preferences. Based on our findings, we created user personas to represent our target audience and used them as a reference throughout the design process. We then began wireframing the app's basic layout and functionality, keeping in mind the user personas and their needs. Once we had a solid wireframe, we began designing the app's visual interface to create a cohesive and visually appealing look and feel. We used Figma's collaborative features to share our work, making it easy to give feedback and make changes in real time. This allowed us to work together efficiently and iterate quickly, making adjustments as needed to improve the user experience. Once we were satisfied with the design, we used Figma's prototyping features to create a clickable prototype that we could use for user testing.

Challenges we ran into

Happy spontaneity was an interesting and challenging prompt. Our team originally had an entire different idea Friday night, only to find out after user feedback and interviews that it did not fit the designathon theme well, but more importantly, our users were confused on the value and usability of our product. We iterated our original idea, but realized we had to start from scratch. Making such a big decision to change our design space and project far beyond our schedule was stressful and difficult. However, we think that the conversations, iterations, user testing/feedback, and all the work we did was for the better and not a waste of our time.

What we learned

Designing an app that encourages physical activity and social engagement requires careful consideration of both user experience and motivation. We learned that the randomized routes and daily challenges could help users stay engaged and motivated, but it's important to balance the difficulty level so that users don't get discouraged. Additionally, through user research and competitive analysis, we learned that the social aspect of the app could be a key factor in driving engagement and retention.

What's next for Reroute

We will conduct further user testing and iterate on the feedback we receive to improve the app's functionality and user experience. We are also exploring the possibility of implementing the app with smartwatches to make it more accessible and convenient for users on-the-go. Furthermore, we plan to test our app's idea with investors and the industry by participating in a case competition. This will help us gain valuable feedback and insights into the market demand and potential for our app. Finally, we will celebrate our accomplishments in this SPARKS designathon by recognizing and rewarding the hard work and dedication of our team members!
