ReputationChain - Project Story
Inspiration
The idea for ReputationChain came from a harsh reality: 1.57 billion freelancers worldwide are trapped by platform lock-in.
When platforms like Upwork or Fiverr ban a user, they lose everything:
- 10+ years of 5-star reviews: gone
- Hundreds of completed jobs: erased
- Hard-earned reputation: reset to zero
The freelancer has no proof. No recourse. No portability.
I realized that your work history should belong to you, not the platform. When I discovered Polkadot's vision for decentralized, interconnected blockchains, I saw the perfect solution: store reputation on-chain where no single platform can control or delete it.
What it does
ReputationChain is a decentralized freelancer reputation system built on Polkadot's Moonbeam parachain. It makes work history permanent, portable, and verifiable.
For Freelancers:
- Create on-chain profiles with name, bio, and skills
- Accept and complete jobs with every action recorded on the blockchain
- Build verifiable reputation through ratings and completed work
- Export portable proof as JSON files to share on any platform
- Own your work history - no platform can delete it
For Clients:
- Post jobs with smart contract escrow - payment held securely until work is approved
- Hire with confidence - see complete, unalterable work history
- Rate and review freelancers on-chain
- Pay 3% fees instead of Upwork's 20%
How It Works:
- Client posts job and stakes payment (0.1 DEV)
- Freelancer accepts job - recorded on-chain
- Freelancer submits completed work
- Client approves and rates (1-5 stars)
- Smart contract automatically releases payment:
- 97% to freelancer
- 3% platform fee
- Reputation score increases based on:
$$R = (J \times 10) + (E \times 5) + (\bar{r} \times 20)$$
Where $R$ = Reputation, $J$ = Jobs Completed, $E$ = Total Earned, $\bar{r}$ = Average Rating
Key Feature: Anyone can verify reputation by checking the blockchain or downloading the freelancer's exported proof file.
How we built it
Tech Stack:
- Smart Contracts: Solidity 0.8.20
- Blockchain: Moonbeam (Polkadot EVM Parachain)
- Network: Moonbase Alpha Testnet
- Frontend: React + ethers.js
- Hosting: Vercel
- Development: Hardhat
Development Process:
Phase 1 - Smart Contract:
- Built
ReputationChain.solwith escrow, profile management, and reputation logic - Implemented 7 job states: Posted → Accepted → In Progress → Submitted → Completed → Disputed → Cancelled
- Added platform fee mechanism (3% on all payments)
- Deployed to Moonbase Alpha:
0x800528CC62833AE351FB4aC26dB3671B49177d35
Phase 2 - Frontend:
- Connected to MetaMask using ethers.js
- Built React interface with inline CSS (purple/pink Web3 aesthetic)
- Implemented role-based views (clients see "Approve" buttons, freelancers see "Submit Work")
- Added blockchain verification displays with Moonscan links
- Created export reputation feature (downloads JSON proof)
Phase 3 - Testing & Deployment:
- Tested full job lifecycle with 2 MetaMask accounts
- Verified all transactions on Moonscan
- Deployed frontend to Vercel with auto-deploy on git push
- Configured automatic network switching to Moonbase Alpha
Why Moonbeam? EVM compatibility let me use familiar Solidity and Ethereum tools while building on Polkadot's ecosystem.
Challenges we ran into
1. Learning Polkadot Ecosystem
First time building on Polkadot. Understanding parachains vs relay chains and where Moonbeam fits took research.
Solution: Moonbeam's EVM compatibility let me use familiar tools while learning Polkadot concepts.
2. Slow Testing on My Laptop
Transactions took 5-10 seconds, making video demos difficult. Recording the full flow would've been 15+ minutes.
Solution: Pre-created test accounts with completed jobs to show results instantly. Added loading indicators for better UX.
3. Making Blockchain Visible
The app looked like a regular website - users couldn't see it was blockchain-powered.
Solution: Added blockchain proof sections with contract addresses, Moonscan links, and exportable reputation files.
4. Wallet Connection UX
Users on wrong networks got confusing errors.
Solution: Implemented automatic network switching that prompts MetaMask to add/switch to Moonbase Alpha.
5. Account Switching
App showed stale data when users switched MetaMask accounts.
Solution: Added event listeners for account changes that automatically refresh the page.
6. Testnet Token Limits
Faucet only provides tokens once per 24 hours, slowing testing.
Solution: Created multiple test accounts ahead of time and added platform fees to make the system self-sustaining.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a fully functional escrow system - First time implementing smart contract payments with automatic release logic
Achieved true portability - Reputation data can be exported and verified by anyone without permission
Clean, intuitive UI - Made Web3 interactions feel simple despite blockchain complexity underneath
Real on-chain deployment - Not just a localhost demo - live on Polkadot testnet with verifiable transactions
Solved a real problem - Platform lock-in affects 1.57 billion people. This is a genuine solution, not just a tech demo
Cross-platform vision - Built foundation for reputation that works across ANY platform, not just one marketplace
10-day timeline - Went from concept to deployed product in under 2 weeks
What we learned
Technical Skills:
- Smart contract development - Solidity security patterns, gas optimization, event-driven architecture
- Polkadot ecosystem - Understanding Moonbeam's role as an EVM parachain and future XCM potential
- Web3 frontend - ethers.js, wallet state management, transaction handling, network switching
- Blockchain economics - Designing sustainable fee structures and incentive mechanisms
Product Insights:
- On-chain vs off-chain - Understanding what must be immutable vs what can be stored elsewhere
- Real-world problem validation - Platform lock-in isn't theoretical - it affects millions daily
- User trust through transparency - Showing blockchain proof dramatically increases confidence
- MVP scoping - Focusing on core escrow + reputation first, saving advanced features for later
Soft Skills:
- Time management - Shipping a working product in 10 days required ruthless prioritization
- User empathy - Making Web3 accessible means hiding complexity, not showcasing it
- Iterative development - Started simple, added features as core functionality proved stable
Biggest lesson: Building on Polkadot via Moonbeam gives you the best of both worlds - Ethereum's developer tools + Polkadot's cross-chain future.
What's next for ReputationChain
