Inspiration
Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, there has been a significant increase of the use of single use protective masks. If they are not properly discarded they could worsen the marine litter crisis, as masks carelessly thrown away on the street can make their way to marine waters through sewers and rivers, adding to the millions of tonnes of debris floating on the surface of the ocean. Through its sheer mass, plastic waste can smother environments and break up ecosystems. Some animals may also end up choking on the litter, become malnourished as plastic fills up their stomachs, or get entangled in the masks’ elastics.
Wearing cloth masks may seem like an eco-friendly solution as they are reusable, but their filtration is not as effective as compared to medical masks according to the cdc.gov. Additionally, rewearing single use face masks is unsanitary and not a viable solution as spraying masks with disinfectants puts the wearer at risk of breathing in the chemicals.
What it does
Because single use face masks can not be directly reworn as face masks, we aim to reduce the face mask litter by collecting used face masks from people with proper precautions and repurposing them into reusable and fashionable everyday products such as tote bags. Our website allows people to learn about the Repurposely project and browse our selection of items!
How we built it
Our website was made using HTML/CSS.
Challenges we ran into
Since all of us are new to web development, we encountered many errors while coding the website. Luckily we were able to fix them with help from the Mocohacks mentors :)
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Before starting this project, none of our team knew how to use HTML or had any experience with web development. However, we were able to learn enough to create an entire website.
What we learned
We all learned how to use HTML and CSS.
What's next for Repurposely
Our website has many improvements to be made. For example, adding a shopping cart for people to view their items and check out, as well as increasing the functionality of existing pages by adding more links and working buttons.
