RepoBloom — Lost Context Recovery Engine

Inspiration

Have you ever opened a project and struggled to understand why something was built a certain way, what decisions were made earlier, or what still needs to be done? In collaborative development, this problem becomes even bigger when a team member leaves or becomes unavailable.

During software development, important information gets scattered across GitHub repositories, documentation, project notes, and team discussions. When someone leaves the team, their knowledge often goes with them. The remaining members have to spend hours going through old commits, files, and conversations just to understand the current state of the project.

That is where the idea for RepoBloom came from. We wanted to build something that could help teams recover missing context instead of forcing them to start from scratch.

What We Built

RepoBloom is an AI-powered Lost Context Recovery Engine designed to help developers understand a project even when its original contributors are no longer available.

Rather than acting as another code search tool, RepoBloom focuses on connecting available information and turning it into useful context for the next developer.

Our goal is simple: make project knowledge easier to recover, understand, and use.

The system is designed around the idea of bringing together information from sources such as code repositories, documentation, and team knowledge. AI-powered reasoning can then help reconstruct the bigger picture and support smoother onboarding.

How We Built It

We started by identifying the core problem: developers do not always lack information; often, they lack the connections between that information.

We designed RepoBloom around three key ideas:

  • Context Recovery: Help developers understand a project's current state, previous work, and relevant technical decisions.
  • Knowledge Connection: Bring information from different project resources into a more coherent view.
  • Developer Onboarding: Reduce the time new team members spend figuring out how an unfamiliar project works.

For the prototype, we used FastAPI for the backend and integrated an AI reasoning endpoint through OpenRouter. We also focused on presenting RepoBloom as a practical developer productivity tool rather than just another chatbot.

Challenges We Faced

One of our biggest challenges was defining what makes RepoBloom different from a conventional AI assistant.

Simply answering questions about code was not enough. The real challenge was to focus on recovering missing context and explaining how different pieces of project information relate to one another.

We also had to consider how information from different sources could be brought together into a useful workflow. Another important consideration was keeping the prototype focused on the core problem while distinguishing the functionality we could demonstrate from the features we wanted to build in the future.

These challenges helped us narrow our focus and prioritize the problem we wanted to solve.

What We Learned

Building RepoBloom taught us that useful AI applications are not always about creating a bigger model or adding more features. Sometimes, the real value comes from identifying a specific problem and designing a workflow that addresses it.

We also gained experience with backend development, AI API integration, project architecture, and translating an abstract idea into a practical prototype.

Most importantly, we realized that knowledge continuity is an important part of software development. Code can remain in a repository, but the reasoning behind it is much harder to preserve.

What's Next?

RepoBloom is a starting point for a more complete project knowledge recovery system.

We want to expand it with integrations for GitHub, documentation platforms, and team communication tools. Future versions could generate project summaries, identify unfinished work, explain important technical decisions, and create personalized onboarding guides for incoming developers.

Our long-term vision is to help development teams preserve not just their code, but also the knowledge that makes that code understandable.

Final Thoughts

We built RepoBloom around a simple belief: a project should not lose its direction just because a team member is no longer there to explain it.

By helping teams recover context and make better use of the information they already have, we hope to make collaboration more resilient and developer onboarding less frustrating.

RepoBloom is about keeping project knowledge alive, even when the people who created it move on.
