Inspiration

The inspiration behind Replicon is the desire to empower individuals in the burgeoning digital economy. In a world of expanding metaverses, video games, and virtual worlds, we saw an opportunity for people to not just consume content, but to become a part of it on their own terms. The core idea is to give individuals true ownership and control over their digital identities, enabling them to monetise their likeness and persona in a secure and transparent way, ushering in a new era of personal empowerment. This project is based on the personal experience of working as a Supporting Artist (SA) in the film industry. In 2023 there were a lot of strikes in the film industry due to AI. Some studios were suggesting to use extras` digital likeness in perpetuity without a proper consent and compensation. As I was scanned on sets a lot and not sure how and where my likeness is used, we decided to embark on a mission to create a way to protect AI likeness for all of us. Not only actors will be interested in this platform - if you’re doing a startup and you need to promote your business on social media, you can create your AI likeness representative for this, if you’re doing a podcast, want to be an NPC character in games, want to enter metaverses or be an extra in some shows/ads/film - this platform will secure your likeness use in a proper way, ensuring a fair compensation.

What it does

Replicon is a decentralised platform that allows individuals to create, own, and monetize assets based on their personal likeness, which can also be used to create AI powered avatars of themselves. These "Replicons" are complete with lifelike 3D avatars and AI-cloned voices. Users can then license their digital identities to be used in a variety of digital media, including video games, virtual worlds, and metaverses. This allows anyone to become a part of immersive digital experiences and earn royalties from their digital likeness.

How we built it

This MVP was built entirely using bolt and also integrating Supabase for the database layer, and Algorand to support signing in with a blockchain wallet. The application was deployed on Netlify to enable public access.

Challenges we ran into

  • The AI occasionally generates faulty code, and it consumes additional tokens to attempt to resolve these errors. This can sometimes take multiple iterations
  • Making manual edits is still a challenge, had to manually add the bolt badge to make it work

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of how quickly we put this together (in just over a day), fully utilizing the weekend of free credits. It’s amazing how functional the app is with so little involvement, and the data is fully persisted in Supabase. Certainly not a great accomplishment on our own, but almost entirely attributed to how easy Bolt was to use.

What we learned

  • Vibe coding is the future
  • We had valuable feedback on how the final platform might look within a matter of hours, instead of days/months that would be expected if we relied on developers
  • With the valuable feedback, we could quickly iterate on them within hours. Again, this is super crucial when trying to launch a startup

What's next for Replicon

The future of Replicon is focused on expanding the ecosystem for our users' digital twins. We aim to forge partnerships with more video game developers, metaverse platforms, and media producers to increase the licensing opportunities available to our creators. We will also continue to refine our AI and avatar creation tools, making it even easier for individuals to create high-quality, lifelike digital versions of themselves and further grow the new digital economy we are building. Plus, we will create the tools that will allow our creators to stay ahead of the scammers who might use their digital likes online by scanning the virtual space and letting them know if their likeness was used without their permission before it will be too late. Our goal with these technical ambitions is to reach a point where we become the de-facto standard for ethically generating AI content from the likeness of real people. We hope this work will bridge the gap between creatives and technologist to enable a future that works for all of us.
