RepLens: AI Form Coach for Fire TV
Inspiration
Staying active at home should be simple, accessible, and engaging. However, many people struggle to maintain proper exercise form when working out alone. Traditional workout videos demonstrate movements but cannot observe the user, count repetitions accurately, or provide personalized feedback.
We wanted to bridge the gap between watching a workout and receiving actual coaching.
This inspired us to create RepLens: AI Form Coach for Fire TV, an intelligent home fitness experience that transforms an ordinary television and smartphone into an interactive workout coaching system.
Our idea was to make fitness coaching more accessible without requiring expensive fitness equipment, dedicated motion sensors, smart mirrors, or wearable devices.
By combining smartphone computer vision, real-time movement analysis, conversational AI, and the large-screen Fire TV experience, RepLens brings personalized workout guidance directly into the living room.
What it does
RepLens is an AI-powered home workout coach that uses a smartphone camera to analyze body movements and Amazon Fire TV to deliver real-time exercise guidance.
The smartphone works as the motion-tracking device, while Fire TV serves as the interactive coaching screen.
Users connect their smartphone to Fire TV through their local Wi-Fi network using a QR code or pairing code. Once connected, they position their phone where the camera can see their body and follow the workout instructions displayed on their television.
Key Functionalities
1. Real-Time Body Pose Detection
RepLens uses computer vision to identify body landmarks such as shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, and ankles. These landmarks help the system understand body posture and movement during exercises.

Together, these features turn an ordinary television into an interactive home fitness coaching platform.
How we built it
RepLens was developed using a combination of Android development, on-device computer vision, real-time communication, movement analysis, and AI-powered coaching.
Android Development
We built the application using Java, Android SDK, and Android Studio, with interfaces adapted for smartphone interaction and Amazon Fire TV remote navigation.
The architecture separates responsibilities between the two devices:
- Smartphone: Camera capture, pose detection, movement analysis, and exercise telemetry.
- Fire TV: Workout management, visual coaching, progress monitoring, and user interaction.
Computer Vision and Pose Estimation
We integrated Google's ML Kit Pose Detection technology to identify body landmarks from the smartphone camera.
Pose coordinates are processed to calculate joint angles, movement direction, range of motion, body alignment, and exercise phases.
Exercise Recognition and Repetition Analysis
We implemented exercise-specific analysis engines that evaluate movement patterns.
These engines use geometric measurements, temporal movement information, confidence checks, and state-based repetition logic to determine exercise progress and generate form feedback.
Real-Time Device Communication
We developed a local Wi-Fi communication system to connect smartphones with Fire TV.
The connection system supports device pairing, movement telemetry, workout control messages, and recovery from temporary disconnections.
AI Integration
We integrated OpenAI-powered functionality to support personalized workout planning, coaching feedback, and post-workout analysis.
The AI functionality complements the local movement-analysis engine rather than replacing it. Pose tracking and authoritative repetition counting are handled separately from language-model-generated coaching.
Voice and Interactive Coaching
We implemented Android text-to-speech and local voice-feedback mechanisms to announce exercise progress, provide instructions, and deliver motivational guidance.
Workout Management and Local Storage
We developed workout session management, configurable exercise targets, workout summaries, and local activity history.
Amazon Fire TV Optimization
We adapted the application for television screens, including D-pad navigation, focus handling, landscape layouts, large-screen readability, and device compatibility configurations.
The result is a connected fitness system combining on-device computer vision with an AI-assisted coaching experience.
Challenges we ran into
Developing RepLens introduced several technical challenges.
1. Accurate Exercise Recognition
One of our biggest challenges was distinguishing valid exercise movements from incomplete repetitions, incorrect posture, and unrelated body movements.
Different exercises require different joint-angle thresholds, movement sequences, and range-of-motion measurements.
We addressed this by developing exercise-specific tracking logic, movement phases, and confidence-based validation.
2. Real-Time Pose Tracking
Human movement can be fast and unpredictable. Changes in camera angle, lighting, distance, and temporary landmark loss can affect detection quality.
We worked on smoothing movement measurements, validating landmarks, and improving tracking stability.
3. Synchronizing Smartphone and Fire TV
Maintaining consistent workout information across two devices was another major challenge.
Network delays and interruptions could potentially cause mismatched repetition counts, delayed coaching messages, or interrupted sessions.
We developed synchronization, acknowledgment, and reconnection mechanisms to improve reliability.
4. Balancing AI Feedback with Accurate Repetition Counting
AI-generated coaching is useful for personalized guidance, but repetition counting requires predictable and measurable logic.
We separated deterministic exercise measurements from AI-generated explanations and coaching recommendations.
This helped prevent language-model responses from becoming the authoritative source of exercise counts.
5. Maintaining Performance
Running pose detection, movement analysis, networking, and real-time coaching simultaneously required careful resource management.
We worked on processing efficiency, telemetry optimization, and reducing unnecessary operations.
6. Designing for Fire TV
Building a fitness experience for television is different from developing a traditional mobile application.
We had to account for remote-control navigation, focus visibility, screen distance, and layouts that remain usable without touch interaction.
7. Exercise Consistency Across Different Users
People perform exercises with different speeds, movement ranges, and camera positions.
Developing reliable movement evaluation required continuous adjustments to movement thresholds, exercise-specific rules, and confidence handling.
These challenges helped us improve the architecture and identify areas requiring further real-device testing and refinement.

What we learned
Building RepLens taught us valuable lessons about computer vision, AI integration, Android development, and cross-device systems.
Computer vision requires more than landmark detection.
Detecting body joints is only the beginning. Meaningful movement analysis also requires understanding joint relationships, movement phases, timing, and tracking confidence.
Real-time fitness feedback must be reliable.
A useful exercise coach needs predictable repetition counts and relevant form feedback. We learned the importance of combining AI technologies with deterministic movement-validation rules.
Generative AI works best when supported by structured data.
Instead of depending on a language model to interpret raw camera frames, we learned to provide structured exercise measurements for coaching and workout personalization.
Cross-device applications require careful synchronization.
Working with smartphone and Fire TV communication highlighted the importance of connection management, recovery mechanisms, and consistent workout states.
User experience is especially important on television.
We learned how to design around D-pad navigation, visible focus indicators, readable instructions, and hands-free interaction.
Privacy should influence system architecture from the beginning.
Local camera processing demonstrated how useful AI-powered features can be developed while minimizing the transfer of sensitive visual information.
Fitness technology requires continuous testing.
Movement recognition can vary depending on camera placement, environment, and exercise technique. We learned that reliable fitness coaching requires ongoing validation with diverse movement samples and real devices.
Overall, RepLens helped us strengthen our understanding of machine learning, movement analysis, real-time application architecture, generative AI, and Amazon Fire TV development.
