Food waste is a massive global problem, with households throwing away an estimated 40% of food purchased. At the same time, many people struggle with meal planning and often find themselves staring into their fridge wondering "what can I make with what I have?" We were inspired to create a solution that tackles both problems simultaneously - reducing food waste while making cooking more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
What it does
Replate is an AI-powered iOS app that transforms your fridge contents into culinary inspiration. Simply scan your ingredients with your phone's camera, and our AI will instantly identify what you have and suggest personalized recipes. The app features:
- Smart Ingredient Scanning: Uses Llama 4 Vision to accurately identify ingredients from photos and estimate expiration dates
- AI Recipe Generation: Powered by Gemini Flash to create personalized recipes based on your available ingredients, dietary preferences, and cuisine choices
- Beautiful Recipe Images: Automatically generates appetizing food images using Gemini 2.0 for every recipe
- Expiration Tracking: Helps you use ingredients before they spoil with smart notifications
- Personalized Preferences: Learns your dietary restrictions, favorite cuisines, and cooking skill level
- Cooking Workflow: Step-by-step instructions with progress tracking and rating system
How we built it
Frontend: Built a beautiful iOS app in SwiftUI with a custom "Rainforest" design system featuring nature-inspired colors and smooth animations. The app includes camera integration, real-time data synchronization, and intuitive user flows. Backend: Developed a robust FastAPI server that orchestrates multiple AI services:
