Inspiration

Food waste is a major global challenge, while many people still struggle to access sufficient food. We were inspired to build RePlate AI to reduce food waste by combining artificial intelligence with food management and donation. Our goal is to make surplus food easier to identify, manage, and redistribute to people in need.

What it does

FoodLoop AI is an AI-powered food waste management and donation platform. It uses a machine learning model to identify food from uploaded images. The platform aims to help users manage surplus food and connect donors with NGOs and people in need. By combining food recognition with donation features, FoodLoop AI promotes responsible food consumption and redistribution.

How we built it

We developed the project using a machine learning approach for food image recognition and a web-based interface for user interaction. We used a food image dataset to train and test the model. The application is designed to connect the ML prediction pipeline with food management and donation workflows. Our architecture supports integrating the model with a Python Fast API backend and a frontend that presents predictions and donation information.

Challenges we ran into

One of our main challenges was working with food image datasets and preparing them for machine learning. We also faced difficulties integrating the trained model with the application and ensuring that the frontend, backend, and prediction pipeline work together. Designing a useful donation workflow while keeping the platform simple and accessible was another important challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to develop FoodLoop AI as a solution that combines machine learning with a meaningful social impact. The project brings together food recognition, food waste management, and food donation in one platform. We are also building a foundation for connecting technology with sustainability and community support.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned more about food image datasets, machine learning workflows, model integration, and full-stack application development. We also learned that building a useful AI solution requires more than model predictions: it requires a practical user experience and a clear path from identifying a problem to helping solve it.

What's next for FoodLoop AI

Our next steps are to improve the food recognition model, strengthen frontend and backend integration, and develop more complete food inventory and donation workflows. We aim to add expiry tracking, donor-recipient coordination, donation status updates, and impact analytics. Our long-term vision is to help communities reduce food waste and redistribute surplus food more efficiently.
