We were inspired by a simple yet universal frustration: standing over a recycling bin, unsure if that plastic container belongs there. In a world drowning in plastic waste, the desire to recycle is real — but the knowledge gap is huge.

That’s where RecycleWise AI steps in. Born from the vision of simplifying recycling through smart technology, it's a web app that helps people make better recycling decisions using just a photo. Empowering, educational, and engaging — that’s the heart of RecycleWise AI.

RecycleWise AI is your personal recycling assistant that helps you go green with confidence. It allows users to:

📸 Upload an image of any plastic item
🤖 Detect and identify the plastic type using AI
✅ Inform whether the item is recyclable or not
📍 Suggest nearby recycling centers

🛠️ How we built it

We crafted RecycleWise AI using a robust and scalable tech stack to ensure a smooth user experience:

Frontend: Built with React.js for a sleek, responsive interface
Styling: Tailwind CSS for clean, modern design
Backend: Node.js with Express.js to handle API logic and image processing
AI Model: TensorFlow.js to classify plastic types from uploaded photos
Database: Firebase for storing user info, history, and image metadata
APIs: Google Maps API to suggest the nearest recycling centers
Data Visualization: Chart.js to showcase the user’s impact visually

Our focus was to keep it fast, intuitive, and accessible on both desktop and mobile.

⚠️ Challenges we ran into

No meaningful solution is born without a few bumps along the road. Here’s what we tackled:

Making image upload and processing fast and secure
