Inspiration
As a small business owner myself, I watched peers struggle to keep up with reviews across 4+ platforms—missing negative feedback, slow to respond, and blind to competitive trends. I knew there had to be a way to streamline this: a tool that centralizes monitoring, automates thoughtful responses, and turns review data into actionable insights. That’s where RepBuilder was born.
What it does
RepBuilder is a cloud-based SaaS platform for local businesses (restaurants, hotels, salons) to manage online reputation. It aggregates reviews from Google, Yelp, TripAdvisor, and Facebook, generates tone-aligned AI replies, sends instant alerts for negative feedback, and delivers monthly performance reports + competitor benchmarks.
How we built it
We built the frontend with React/TailwindCSS (focused on smooth animations and intuitive UX) and backend with Node.js/Express, hosted on AWS. We integrated OpenAI’s API for reply generation, Chart.js for visualizing reputation trends, and PostgreSQL for storing review/alert data. The platform was built iteratively—starting with core review aggregation, then adding AI replies, alerts, and benchmarking.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest hurdle was syncing real-time review data across disparate platform APIs (each with unique rate limits and data structures). We also struggled to balance rich animations (for UX) with performance—especially on lower-end devices. Finally, tuning AI reply tone to feel human (not robotic) for negative reviews took weeks of testing.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a tool that cuts response time to negative reviews by 80% (via real-time alerts) and makes reputation analytics accessible to non-technical business owners. The UI/UX is intuitive enough for anyone to use, and the AI replies consistently match brand voice—users tell us it feels like writing their own responses, faster.
What we learned
I learned the power of user-centric design: early feedback from local merchants reshaped everything (e.g., simplifying filters, adding empathetic tone options for AI replies). Technically, I mastered balancing third-party APIs with custom code, and how to optimize animations without sacrificing performance. Most importantly, I learned small businesses don’t need "complex" tools—they need focused ones.
What's next for RepBuilder
We’re expanding to support more review platforms (e.g., Airbnb, Zillow) and adding predictive analytics to flag emerging reputation risks. We’ll also roll out team collaboration features (for multi-location businesses) and integrate with CRM tools to link reviews to customer profiles. Finally, we’re testing a mobile-responsive dashboard for on-the-go management.
