Inspiration

The growing concern over environmental degradation and waste management issues inspired the development of ReNuOIL. Used cooking oil is frequently disposed of improperly, leading to significant pollution and wasted resources. This situation presented an opportunity to transform waste into value by facilitating connections between sellers of used cooking oil—such as restaurants, hostels, and local food businesses—and biodiesel factories that can repurpose the oil into biodiesel. This initiative promotes sustainability and contributes to the advancement of green energy solutions.

What it does

ReNuOIL serves as a platform that connects sellers of used cooking oil with biodiesel factories. Key features of the platform include: Oil Quality Checker: Ensures that the oil meets necessary quality standards before it is processed. Real-Time Location Tracking: Facilitates efficient logistics for oil collection and delivery. Green Waste-Related Quizzes: Engages users with quizzes that offer rewards, promoting awareness about waste management. Marketplace for Green Products: Provides a space for eco-friendly products, including loyalty discounts for users. Live Statistics and Articles: Offers real-time data on green technology stocks and informative articles about waste management and health impacts.

How we built it

ReNuOIL was developed using a modern tech stack that enhances functionality and user experience: Frontend: Built with Next.js, enabling an interactive user interface. Backend: Utilizes Node.js and Express.js for robust server-side logic. Database: Employs MongoDB to manage user data and transactions efficiently. AI Integration: Incorporates Generative AI (Gen AI) and PyTorch for features such as the oil quality checker and personalized content. Cloud Services: Hosted on Vultr Cloud, ensuring scalability and reliable performance.

Challenges we ran into

Throughout the development process, several challenges emerged: Ensuring the accuracy of the oil quality checker, which required extensive fine-tuning of AI algorithms. Seamlessly integrating real-time location tracking into the user experience. Balancing sustainability objectives with user incentives to attract a broad audience. Managing database performance to handle high traffic volumes and extensive data.
