Inspiration
Managing rental properties is often fragmented across disconnected tools—spreadsheets for rent tracking, chat apps for tenant communication, and phone calls for maintenance coordination. Landlords struggle with visibility, while tenants face friction during onboarding, service requests, and rent payments.
We built RentSynk & Services to unify the entire rental ecosystem into a single, cohesive operating platform where property owners, managers, and tenants stay perfectly in sync.
What it does
RentSynk & Services bridges property operations and tenant convenience across mobile and web:
- Streamlined Onboarding: Seamless digital onboarding for tenants and landlords with phone-based authentication.
- Property & Unit Tracking: Centralized dashboards to manage properties, lease details, and real-time occupancy.
- Service & Maintenance Coordination: Built-in incident reporting and maintenance workflows to handle service requests promptly.
- Cross-Platform Accessibility: A unified experience across iOS, Android, and Web browsers, ensuring accessibility from any device.
How we built it
We designed RentSynk with a scalable, modern full-stack architecture:
- Frontend: Built with Flutter, delivering a native 60fps experience across iOS, Android, and Web from a single unified codebase.
- Backend: A high-performance API hosted on Microsoft Azure App Service, handling business logic, user states, and service orchestration.
- Authentication & Security: Powered by Firebase Authentication with SMS/OTP handling, reinforced by Firebase App Check and reCAPTCHA to protect backend resources against abuse.
- Location & Maps: Integrated with Mapbox APIs to power spatial property discovery and location verification.
- Deployment & Networking: Automated deployment pipelines using shell scripts, fronted by Cloudflare for DNS management, edge caching, and SSL termination.
Challenges we ran into
Shipping a production-ready application across multiple app ecosystems simultaneously presented several real-world engineering hurdles:
- App Store Review & Sandbox Verification: Configuring non-SMS test credential workflows in Firebase Auth to ensure Apple App Review could seamlessly verify the onboarding flows without triggering real telecommunication gateways.
- Cross-Platform Security Hardening: Harmonizing Firebase App Check and platform-specific attestation tokens across mobile binaries and the compiled Flutter Web bundle.
- Custom Domain & SSL Routing: Managing DNS challenges between Cloudflare proxying and Azure App Service automated managed certificates to guarantee zero-downtime SSL issuance.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Simultaneous Multi-Store Pipeline: Successfully packaging, building, and deploying release artifacts (.ipa, .aab, and web bundles) ready for both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
- Production-Grade Infrastructure: Building a fully secured, enterprise-grade backend pipeline instead of relying solely on mocked local data.
- Frictionless UX: Delivering an intuitive, clean Flutter user experience that feels responsive on any screen size.
What we learned
- The nuances of enterprise authentication pipelines and managing verification environments across sandbox reviewers.
- Fine-tuning build pipelines and environment variable security (
--dart-definevs. server runtime exports) across different deployment targets. - The importance of robust DNS, proxy, and certificate negotiation when pairing edge platforms like Cloudflare with cloud providers like Azure.
What's next for RentSynk & Services
- Automated Rent Settlements: Direct in-app automated payment gateway integrations with recurring invoicing and receipts.
- Smart Maintenance Scheduling: Vendor auto-assignment algorithms based on service category and proximity.
- Advanced Analytics: Granular cash flow, occupancy rate, and expense tracking visualizations for multi-property portfolio managers.
