Inspiration
One of the biggest issues in the rental market is the lack of transparency and trust between landlords and tenants. Even though property management platforms exist, many are controlled by one party, which leads to concerns that data—such as maintenance records, deposits, and damage reports—can be influenced or manipulated. As a result, tenants often feel unprotected, while landlords struggle to verify tenant reliability.
We built RentProof to solve this imbalance by creating a neutral, independent system that both sides can trust.
How we used MeDo
We used MeDo to help us create the frontend and assist in backend development.
One of the most impressive things we created with MeDo was our landing page, as it was seamless and showed confidence and provided trust to our users(landlords and tenants)
What it does
RentProof is a third-party rental transparency platform that securely records and organizes all key rental interactions between tenants and landlords. This includes payments, deposits, maintenance requests, and agreement history.
By acting as a neutral system, RentProof ensures that both tenants and landlords have access to the same verified information, reducing disputes, improving accountability, and making the rental process more transparent and fair.
How we built it
We developed RentProof as a full-stack platform with a focus on simplicity and trust. The frontend allows tenants and landlords to submit and track requests, upload relevant proof, and view transaction history. The backend handles secure storage of rental records, timestamps every action, and organizes data into structured logs that cannot be easily altered.
We designed the system around neutrality, ensuring that neither party has control over modifying historical records once they are created.
Challenges we ran into
A major challenge was designing a system that is truly neutral while still being practical to implement. We had to carefully structure the database to prevent data manipulation while still allowing updates for legitimate actions like new payments or maintenance updates.
Another challenge was balancing transparency with privacy, ensuring that both landlords and tenants have access to necessary information without exposing sensitive data unnecessarily.
We also ran into issues with Firebase, which gave us a hard time when connecting Firebase to tenant portal website as well as the main website.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud that we built a working prototype of a neutral rental transparency system that clearly demonstrates how trust can be improved in real estate transactions. We successfully implemented structured, time-stamped logs for payments and maintenance requests, creating a clear and verifiable history for both parties.
What we learned
We learned how critical trust and data integrity are in systems involving multiple stakeholders with conflicting interests. We also gained experience in designing fair systems where no single user has unfair control over shared data, which is a key principle in real-world platform design.
What's next for RentProof
Next, we plan to enhance RentProof with stronger verification systems such as identity validation for tenants and landlords, AI-assisted dispute detection, and possibly blockchain-based record storage for full immutability. We also aim to expand it into a complete rental ecosystem with ratings, reputation scores, and automated rental agreements. Importantly, we also aim to incorporate AI into overseeing the payments, dashboards, and more so that it's less work for the landlords and more efficiency and trust.
