Inspiration

Moving to a new city for college, work, or a temporary stay often means buying furniture, electronics, and other essentials that may only be needed for a short period. This can be expensive, inconvenient, and wasteful. I feel the same.

We wanted to build a solution that makes temporary living more flexible and affordable. This idea led us to RentMate, a platform where users can discover, compare, and rent everyday products instead of purchasing them upfront.

Our goal was simple: make essential products accessible without requiring a large upfront investment.

What it does

RentMate is an AI-powered rental marketplace designed for students, professionals, families, remote workers, and people relocating to a new city. Users can:

  • 🛍️ Browse furniture, electronics, and everyday essentials
  • 🔍 Search and filter products by category and price
  • 🤖 Get AI-powered rental recommendations based on their requirements
  • 📦 Select rental duration and calculate rental costs
  • 💰 View rental prices and security deposits
  • ❤️ Save products to their wishlist
  • 🏠 List their own products for rent
  • 📋 View and manage their rentals

For example, a user can simply tell the AI: "I need a study setup under ₹2000 per month." RentMate can then suggest suitable products based on the requirement.

The overall experience follows: Discover → Compare → Rent → Use → Return

How we built it

RentMate was built collaboratively by Anuj Uttam and Aryan Tiwari. We divided the development work and worked together on the frontend, backend, API integration, UI/UX, and overall project architecture. Tech Stack: Frontend

  • React.js
  • Vite
  • JavaScript
  • CSS
  • React Router
  • Lucide React

Backend

  • Node.js
  • Express.js
  • REST APIs

Database

  • MongoDB
  • Mongoose

AI

  • AI-powered recommendation system
  • Rule-based fallback recommendations

We also implemented local storage fallback functionality so that important parts of the MVP can continue to work even when backend/database services are unavailable.

Challenges we ran into

🔧 Connecting Frontend and Backend We had to properly connect the React frontend with our Express backend and handle API requests, responses, errors, and fallback states.

🤖 AI Recommendations Making the AI assistant useful for natural-language rental requirements was challenging. We also created a fallback recommendation system so that the feature could still provide useful suggestions when the AI service is unavailable.

🗂️ Managing the Project Structure As the project grew, our initial code became difficult to manage. We refactored the application into reusable components, pages, utilities, and data modules.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we were able to transform an idea into a functional rental marketplace within the hackathon timeline. Some things we are particularly proud of:

  • 🚀 Built a complete React + Node.js rental marketplace
  • 🤖 Integrated an AI-powered rental assistant
  • 🛍️ Created product discovery, filtering, and rental flows
  • 📦 Implemented rental duration and cost calculation
  • 🏠 Added the ability for users to list their own items
  • ❤️ Added wishlist functionality
  • 📋 Added rental management
  • 📱 Built a responsive user interface
  • 🧩 Refactored the application into a modular architecture
  • 🤝 Successfully collaborated as a two-person team Most importantly, we built RentMate around a real-world problem rather than just building another demo application.

What we learned

Working on RentMate taught us much more than just implementing features. We learned how to:

  • Build and structure a full-stack application
  • Connect React with a Node.js/Express backend
  • Design and consume REST APIs
  • Work with MongoDB and Mongoose
  • Integrate AI into a real-world application
  • Build reusable React components
  • Handle API failures with fallback mechanisms
  • Design responsive interfaces
  • Debug issues under time constraints
  • Collaborate effectively using Git and GitHub
  • Prioritize features while working within a hackathon deadline We also learned that building a good product is not only about adding features—it is about identifying a real problem and creating a simple user experience around it.

What's next for RentMate

RentMate is currently an MVP, but we see several opportunities to take it further. 🔮 Future Plans

  • 🔐 Secure user authentication and profiles
  • 💳 Online payments and automated refunds
  • 📍 Location-based rental discovery
  • ⭐ Reviews and ratings for products and users
  • 🔄 Complete booking and return tracking
  • 🔔 Notifications for bookings, returns, and payments
  • 👤 Dedicated owner dashboard
  • 🛡️ Admin dashboard
  • 🤖 More personalized AI recommendations
  • 📊 Rental analytics and demand insights Our long-term vision is to turn RentMate into a complete rental ecosystem where people can easily access the things they need for as long as they need them—without the financial burden of purchasing everything upfront.

Built with ❤️ by Anuj Uttam & Aryan Tiwari.
