Inspiration

We've always thought it would be fun to run our own coffee shop. However, the barriers to opening our own shop are too high at the moment, specifically because we don't have enough funding to lease a space for an entire year. It would be so much easier and less financially risky if we could rent out space during the day in another food/drink business that operates primarily at night, such as a bar. This is why we're creating Rently. Rently allows entrepreneurs to pursue their passions in the food and drink industry without having to make too big of a financial commitment, while also helping business owners maximize their store's potential by allowing them to earn passive income during off hours/days.

What it does

If you're an aspiring cafe owner, private chef who wants to serve the public occasionally, or group of bartenders who want to set up great parties on the weekends, Rently is the best app to find a venue. Rently allows business owners to rent out their stores (including restaurants, cafes, bars, and more) to another person or business when they are closed. It's easy; to create a listing, simply add details such as address, daily rate, type of venue, square feet, an amazing picture to show off your store, and short description. Renters can see your listing, along with others, on the 'Properties' page and filter to easily find what they're looking for based on size, price, or conveniently browse by location using the search feature.

How we built it

ReactJS, ExpressJS, NodeJS, MongoDB, Google Maps API, Stripe API (and designs in Figma)

Challenges we ran into

During ideation it took us awhile to land on the right idea. We knew we wanted to address the Otsuka x Valuenex prompt of how to bring people together through food through more in-person connections.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of creating seamless processes throughout the entire user experience, for both our renters and our listers.

Second, we're proud that businesses will reduce their carbon footprint by renting out spaces that would otherwise go unused.

Third, we're excited that Rently will bring communities together by sharing common spaces and creating more brick and mortar business. We're proud that one of the core values of this app is to empower small/independent owners to explore their passions and take their businesses to the next level.

What we learned

One member learned how to use the Google Maps API for the first time and the other member got more frontend experience/used Typescript for the first time.

What's next for Rently

We plan to continue building and iterating on Rently to best serve business owners and entrepreneurs everywhere.
