Inspiration

*Data on the masses of waste in the UK inspired us to make a change. To change the consumerist system by design from buying and wasting to sharing and using. We were also inspired by second hand online ecommerce platforms, as well as Uber and Airbnb with the fundamental sense of community. We built UI wireframes which we followed to code the app in React. *

What it does

Our people powered, peer to peer renting lending platform Rentaru offers a sustainable solution. Through our site, anythinguseful equipment and tools can be rented locally at affordable prices, with recycling drives, and equitable business partnerships.

Rentaru is data driven. We conducted comprehensive research to understand the problem statements, people's wants and needs, plus the possibilities to create change.

How we built it

The app interface is built in React and deployed with continuous deployment through Netlify's CDN from the Rentaru GitHub repository. Python generated graphs were also implemented to analyse and track data.

Challenges we ran into

We faced challenges from the beginning with varied levels and abilities, technical issues, and even timezone differences. We overcame all of these with enthusiasm and energy! We encouraged each other to use our creativity to solve the problems in front of us, with the aim of solving even bigger problems

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Building an almost usable app with data and a smart UI that considers user experience more than other competitor sites. We're proud of what we achieved in such little time, and proud of ourselves for pushing through the event!

What we learned

We learnt a lot about fast pace brainstorming and speed coding. But also about sustainability, business and about teamwork!

What's next for Rentaru

With premium and partner listing plans, there is economic as well as ecological potential for Rentaru! Long term, bigger partners such as supermarkets could join the Rentaru scheme and rent out products, challenging the consumerist model and bringing more profitable potential. We believe the Rentaru empowers people with knowledge and options that are both affordable and rewarding.

Inspiration

Statistics on how much we send to landfill. We buy items that we only tend to use once per month. Why not share our items with others. Pool together the resources of the community to create a system of renting out items. Get our local economy starting again

What it does

Web app where members can post items for rent to local users for a small fee.

How we built it

React app hosted on netlify

Challenges we ran into

Filling out this form!! We faced technical challenges with different types of audio and video files.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Really proud of how we worked together overcoming timelines and a mix of abilities.

What we learned

Learnt so much about being in a team without the backing of a company or college - we did it alone.

What's next for Rentaru

Add features that can use APIs to extract data for users to see how much they can influence the circular economy.
