Our way to the idea
Starting with the initial problem we wanted to solve which is the excessive replacement of objects with new ones we heard of a project already happening at EPFL: the Fix&Repair event that takes place every month at the SPOT where you can go to repair your broken stuff. We got in touch and had a conversation with one of the persons who organize that and it was really interesting but we also understood that the problematic we were focusing on was already being treated. What we also learned about is the concept of casual object renting systems that take already place in northern switzerland for instance. That particular idea of sharing stuff one doesn't need at the moment letting others use them in exchange of a little money and therefore lowering the need to buy extra items when they could just be rented really hyped us.
The concept
The concept is fairly simple and yet we think really powerful in that it just requires to provide a forum where people at EPFL can either ask to borrow certain things or on the other side propose their objects to lend for a certain price. The key is just to connect these people at the right moment and doing so you allow people who don't want to buy relatively expensive stuff just for a single use and can't find a way to get their hands on one to save money. Apart from the money it also serves as a way of promoting sustainability by reducing the amount of factory new items.
How we built it
So we can't really credit ourselves of having built something appart from a little presentation of the concept but have done researches including an interview, entrepreneurial thinking and tried at least to learn web developping during the course of a night.
Challenges we ran into
Firstly, as complete beginners we had to face a whole new challenge being part of a hackathon, finding ideas quickly, chosing which one to develop and then making our way to an interesting concept. Developping a webapp from scratch without any knowledge in that kind of developpment was really challenging, a bit too much actually because sadly we couldn't do it within the given time.
Our achievement
Being part of a Hackathon for the first time was pretty interesting and experiencing what it is to develop use make a strong use of both creativity and decision making is already an accomplishment
What we learned
We learned some cool stuff during various presentations and the visit of the SPOT that will certainly be useful in the future. As said before the experience in itself will also be benficial in number of ways.
