Inspiration

We wanted to make a game that would cause the player to reflect on their actions, and how their (potentially selfish) decisions can impact others.

What it does

This project gives the player the opportunity to decorate an apartment however they want. There are many different options for the player to choose from while designing their own space.

But, little do they know, those decisions aren't without consequences. In the second half of the game, they play as a resident in the apartment building. Not only was this resident not consulted on any of the design decisions, but they also have to pay more for rent to afford these improvements. Will you be able to afford the aftermath of your own decisions?

This is game is meant to be a sort of commentary on how seemingly harmless actions, like upgrading appliances in an apartment, could potentially have drastic, negative consequences on others. Hopefully, this game will encourage others to put some more thought into how their actions will affect others in the future.

How we built it

We built, designed, and implemented this game using GameMaker. All assets and game design were created by us.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are extremely proud of the game that we have produced. For both of us, this was our first time attempting to make any sort of proper game. The fact that we came out with a good looking and functional game was a huge accomplishment for us.

Challenges we ran into and what we learned from them

The biggest challenge we faced was learning an entirely new framework and language in order to create this game. Neither of us had any experience using GameMaker before, so we were starting from scratch in terms of understanding how to create a game. This did end up teaching us a lot more about how different languages are structured, and how to pick up new content by reading documentation on the fly. The other big challenge was just a lack of time. This game ended up being a lot more involved than we had anticipated, and time was tighter than we had hoped. With this experience, next time we'll be able to create a more reasonable time estimate.

What's next for Renovation Game (with a twist)

If given more time, we would love to increase the amount of replay ability in our game. We'd be able to create more options in the first phase of the game, and develop more challenges for the second phase. We could also increase the complexity of the game, so there are more factors for the player to balance, to keep them on their toes.
