Inspiration
The inspiration behind our idea was the fact that we really liked the idea of renewable energy as a topic. We then listed problems that exist today as well as information that is available but hard to find. Amongst our various ideas, we came up with EcoMap as it provides data which can be hard to find online and displays it with simplicity.
What it does
EcoMap provides you with the best locations for building renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. This is done by grabbing historical weather data and required conditions for maximum energy generation.
How we built it
- Initially we created a google doc to put our ideas together and how it would function.
- We then looked for a public API that could provide us with the data we needed.
- After sorting that data, we displayed this on a webpage using react and CSS.
Challenges we ran into
- Implementing smooth transitions using CSS
- Finding a public API capable of providing historical data and higher query limits.
- Converting Python code into JavaScript
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- We are proud of the minimalistic design and animations of the website which gives a smooth user experience.
- We created a website to help pinpoint most efficient places to create renewable energy.
- Accessing the Visual Crossing API to grab historical weather data and integrating this with react.
What we learned
- We learned how to work in a team and take various roles to develop a project.
- Web development using React, CSS and HTML.
- Sorting data using algorithms to provide accurate responses.
What's next for EcoMap
- More renewable energy types
- City search feature (to permanently add waypoints)
- Highlighted areas (instead of markers)
- More provided city data
- More accurate weather data
- Rewrite backend to feature own API instead of JSON
- More filters and pinpointed data
