Inspiration

We both love exploring recipes in the kitchen and that love grew from the nostalgic cooking-filled animation, Ratatouille! In Ratatouille, a curious rat chef Remy grows his love for cooking by scurrying into a human filled kitchen and following his passion for food!

Remy's Recipe Race has been built for the younger generations, with hope to share the passion for cooking and help youth understand what ingredients make up the delicious food they know and love! While children learn about nutrition and cooking, they can have fun problem solving and racing around the virtual kitchen!

What it does

In Remy's Recipe Race, you play as Remy the chef himself! Race around kitchens and dodge dangers as you collect the ingredients for varying levels of recipes! When all of the ingredients are collected, you have completed the level!

How we built it

Remy's Recipe Race was built using Unity, a 3D gaming development platform, and Visual Studio 2019 for custom C# code editing.

Challenges we ran into

Neither of us had any experience with Unity, and quite limited experience with c#. Additionally, we started this project a number of hours into the hackathon, meaning we had less time to discuss and develop our idea. It didn't help that the first time we created the character and backdrop, all the progress was unfortunately wiped and we had to start from scratch! Staying positive and true like Remy, we were able to restart and compile the first working level of the game!

On the teamwork side, initially there were challenges staying on the same page regarding what we wanted the game functionalities to be. In the end, we both came together with our love for cooking and merged our great ideas into a fun and educational cooking game!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to make a functional 1st person game from scratch that was very similar to the vision we had for our game from the start without running into too many errors that required major design changes. Also having this be the first game that we created both individually and as a team, helped us learn a new skill that could be beneficial in our future career oaths.

What we learned

We learned a variety of different aspects when making a game, such as learning character and environmental map design, creating backend code that runs the logic and functionality behind our game objects, and learning different aspects of game physics that makes a smoother logical experience for our users. We also learned about Unity as a software and how we can use animations, camera panning, and audio layering to add depth to games!

What's next for Remy's Recipe Run

Remy's Recipe Run is definitely not completed! For one, it would be great to add new levels and recipes to the game (e.g. pizza, soups, salads, etc). It would also be great if there were animations and fun facts about each recipe at the completion of each level! Updates can be made aesthetically to the background, foreground, characters, and more. In the future, the animation style could be done in Blender and then imported to a Unity project. Most likely, this will project will be put onto the back burner until we both have time to rework the game!
