Inspiration

We want to make it easier to send event invites to multiple people at once. In its basic state, Outlook does not provide a way for event organizers to quickly send Trackable Event Reminders to multiple people. Instead, a person has to open a spreadsheet, manually find and select their addresses from columns, and add them to the recipient section of the invite. When a user has to do this for numerous event reminders throughout the event, which is usually composed of smaller events, such as workshops and ceremonies, it gets pretty tedious. This is where we come in with our integrated solution to make it simple! No more switching between windows and double-checking your data; we select the data for you in a simple and concise way.

Implementation

We did not have previous experience with creating extensions, and especially extensions for Microsoft Office products. This has proved challenging and has been a tremendous learning experience. Thankfully, documentation was extensive, and AI tools provided us with great assistance as well. The project is, at its basic form, a web application, with everything else working to host it on a server and integrate it into Outlook. Part of the plan was to put the server on a hosting service and get a GoDaddy domain. We got the domain. We didn't get to use it. We now own "thegirlsare.cooking". Excellent addition to the project, we are looking forward to using it.

What's next?

There is plenty to polish and fix, first of all. Second of all, some things are hard coded and they don't have to be. Third, currently it runs locally, and ideally it would run on a server (on thegirlsare.cooking). Working on these challenges will be the focus of continuous support.

I helped the team define our roles and clarify what each member would focus on based on our teammate’s original project pitch. Throughout the weekend, I worked on developing the web application version of our Outlook add-in, but after encountering some errors we couldn’t resolve in time, we collectively decided to concentrate on perfecting the extension and save the web version for future expansion. I also contributed to the UX/UI design to ensure consistency with the extension’s functionality and helped develop the pitch deck presentation. It was a great learning experience in both teamwork and adaptability. Grateful to be apart of an amazing group and working with manifest, node.js, and git. Excited to see how Outlook users implement this feature!

I was basically a team lead, delegating and writing documentation for my teammates to follow. I was also working on actually getting the application into the Outlook, which was very challenging, but I am happy to have an opportunity to work with my team on a common goal and make something actually useful, even if just for my wife, who sends invites all the time.

I was responsible for designing the overall format, visual layout, and interactive functionality of the add-in. I created the structure that organizes how information appears, developed the interface’s look and feel to ensure a clean and user-friendly design, and implemented the interactive elements that allow users to seamlessly engage with the add-in’s features. Really happy with the way it turned out, hopefully it can be helpful to Outlook users!
