Motivation

Over two thousand hikers in the United States go missing per year. Search and rescue operations are generally timely and heavily depend on the speed in which the MIA hiker is found. We aim to speed these operations up and create a safer environment for everyone.

Abstract

Remote Ranger plans to revitalize search and rescue operations in National Parks by creating a cheap, programmable beacon for hikers and backpackers to hold as they travel. If they don't return within a specific window of their expected arrival, the beacon will automatically send out their GPS location to the nearest ranger station via the SigFOX standard. Rangers then will be able to quickly and safely find the missing hikers and bring them to safety.
