Inspiration
It is important not to skip or miss a dose of your medication, missing a dose of medicine would lead to missing the best window time for treatment or failing the treatment.
From a study, it is known that over 80% of patients had missed a dose of medicine. The outbreak of Covid-19 has made patient care more challenging - there is an increase in demand for remote outpatient solutions and caregivers may not be able to get in touch with their patients due to the pandemic.
Many medication reminder apps help to tackle this problem by sending regular notifications to users. However, not everyone has the access to the internet or smart devices.
To tackle the digital divide, we are building a chatbot to send medication reminders via programmed phone calls.
What it does
Web app for registration
Patients' doctor/ family members/ caregiver can help patients to sign up for phone medication reminders by inputting their name for verification, contact, and medication information
They will be asked to verify the phone numbers by inputting a 6-digit code
Phone reminders
Chatbot will call the patient at preferred times indicated in the web app form and verify the identity of patients by asking their name and date of birth
When a matched record is found, the bot will remind the patient to take medicine, including the name of medicine and dosage
If patients are busy at that moment, the snooze function will be triggered and the bot will call again later
How we built it
Chatbot development using Twilio
Front-end development using html, css
Back-end development using Google Cloud Platform, Python and MongoDB
Challenges we ran into
The time crunch was a challenge. We spent some time figuring out what we want to build and design the conversational flow
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built a functional prototype!
What we learned
We learnt a lot about using Twilio for chatbot development and IVR, and using MongoDB for database
What's next for Remia
- customize reminder message
