Inspiration
A Latino friend’s grandma had an ocular issue but was denied care at NYU Langone. They were then referred to {...} for treatment based on their financial situation. This story is just one of the many barriers to healthcare faced by the uninsured, underinsured, underrepresented, undocumented members of the Hispanic & Latino Community. Our goal is to develop an app to reduce the barrier of access to healthcare by allowing a user to find a nearby FQHC which will treat them regardless of the personal financial situation. Promotoras can help educate the community on how to use their app to be more self-reliant.
- 18.4% — Uninsured. Hispanic people under 65 were uninsured in 2024, vs. 6.8% of White people.
- 52% — Skipped care due to cost. Hispanic/Latino working-age adults skipped at least one type of care because of cost.
- 39% — Navigation barrier. Immigrants who delayed or skipped care said they did not know where or how to find services.
- 36% — Language barrier. Hispanic immigrants with limited English proficiency reported difficulty getting healthcare because of English.
- 48% — Care avoided. Likely undocumented immigrants said they or a family member avoided care because of immigration-related concerns.
