Inspiration

As information grows in scope and complexity, it seems paradoxical that people can't find what they specifically need in an intuitive way. Through research on popular medical service apps and personal experience, we've learned that people who are less technically savvy may find the solution to medical needs unclear or difficult to attain. We were interested in finding alternative medical solutions for these people.

What it does

Remedi integrates a complex database of categories, symptoms, and cures for illnesses with a user-friendly and minimalist interface so users can find their solution quickly and easily. It features an intuitive layout, symptom identification for people and common pets, and even inspirational quotes!

How I built it

We used Android Studio (Java and XML) for the framework and back-end development, and Adobe Photoshop for design elements. We also used Forismatic's API to generate the quotes.

Challenges I ran into

Michael - I have never programmed in Android Studio or XML before, so it was difficult to get used to Android's complex development environment. I even learned a few new things about Java.

Harsh - I did not know Android Studio and am taking my first computer science class this year, so a lot of these concepts were new to me. I often found it difficult to help my teammates if they needed it, in this regard.

Ryan - Although I had the most experience with Android Studio in the group, I was not nearly proficient in the interface, and I spent a lot of time trying to synchronize my information with that of my group.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are glad to have overcame several hurdles in learning the format of Android Studio as well as constantly adding features and ideas to our original concept of the app. We are relatively inexperienced programmers, so it is intimidating yet rewarding to be considered on the same playing field as other, more experienced programmers.

What we learned

Not only did we learn new languages and formats, but we also learned how to use our disparate skill sets to our collective advantage, splitting the duties evenly. Both app development and collaboration are key skills for computer science careers and positions.

What's next for Remedi

We may expand our database of medical information and features while continuing to uphold the app's ease of use and general aesthetic.
