Inspiration
The idea was to build a social app with "friendships" at its core. And we noticed that our seniors were graduating.
Graduating brings smiles, tears, and that heartbreaking feeling of leaving your college and closest friends behind. The friends with whom you have shared your deepest secrets, bunked classes, and, made lifelong memories.
And then you say that last goodbye. Goodbyes are tough, especially the online ones.
We knew that this was a problem, and we wanted to solve it.
What it does
Relic is your virtual yearbook. It is a simpler way to carry on the rituals of the Yearbook and store the best memories for a lifetime.
What's in the app?
📒 Capture all of your college memories. Remember scribble day, where you used to sign each other t-shirts, Relic app is the same but as a yearbook!
✒️ Get yearBook signatures from all your friends!
✍️ Sign your friend's yearbook by writing about the best moments you spent together.
How we built it
We did the designing and development of the app in phases. It took around two weeks combined, from the start to the launch of the app. We used flutter, firebase, and snapkit (ofcousre) to build this.
Challenges we ran into
Completing into the time frame was a big challenge.
The biggest challenge was to solve the chicken and egg problem. It won't be attractive to users till it has a lot of users and this is called the network effect. Any social app is only valuable because of its network effect - that is, your friends are there.
We solved this by a "contained-fire" strategy. The trick was to focus on a deliberately narrow market. In our case launching is not for everyone but just in one college. It's like keeping a fire contained at first to get it really hot before adding more logs.
It may seem counterintuitive as we restricted the app to just a few thousand users of one college. But because they felt it was really for them, a critical mass of them signed up. And this was enough for the network effect to kick in, which got us huge word-of-mouth growth.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Integrating snap kit in such a short duration and submitting our hack! It was a roller coaster ride!
What we learned
It was a great experience overall and I loved every bit of it.
What's next for Relic: Your virtual yearbook
So what truly is our mission? People think Relic is about a yearbook. But really, we are about deep meaningful friendships. You see, we are starting with this yearbook as it's a great way to connect, but the picture is a lot bigger.
The vision is to make Relic into a social app that focuses on real friendships, and the feeling of togetherness.
