Inspiration The project was born out of growing personal concern over rising safety issues, specifically increasing cases of kidnapping and theft associated with informal Keke NAPEP transport. Existing transit options lacked accountability and reliable tracking, highlighting an urgent need for a secure, transparent mobility system where passengers can travel with peace of mind.
What it does Reikeke is a secure ride-hailing and management platform designed specifically for local Keke transport. It transforms everyday community transit by introducing:
Secure Dispatch & Verification: Features like unique PIN verification to ensure riders match the correct driver.
Real-Time Tracking: Live GPS breadcrumb tracking that keeps a continuous trail of active trips for enhanced passenger safety.
Fair & Dynamic Pricing: Smart pricing configurations that bring transparency and predictability to fares.
How we built it The platform was architected from scratch with a robust, scalable technical stack:
Frontend: Built using React Native and Expo to deliver a smooth, cross-platform mobile experience for both riders and drivers.
Backend: Powered by Django, handling complex business logic, trip lifecycles, and a custom subscription gatekeeper.
Database & Infrastructure: Uses Neon PostgreSQL for reliable data persistence, managed with Alembic, and deployed seamlessly via Render and Vercel.
Challenges I ran into Race Conditions in Ride Dispatch: Preventing multiple drivers from simultaneously accepting the same ride request required engineering bulletproof transaction locks.
Real-Time Tracking Reliability: Designing a seamless GPS breadcrumb receiver that logs location data accurately without draining device batteries or overwhelming backend resources.
Balancing Local Realities with Scale: Adapting high-end architectural patterns to fit the unique, fast-paced operational constraints of local transport markets.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of Successfully building a complete ride engine from the ground up—from foundational database models and fare estimators to active trip persistence and live tracking.
Solving complex backend concurrency challenges to ensure smooth, conflict-free ride matching.
Translating a deeply personal safety concern into a tangible, high-impact technological solution.
What I learned Concurrency Control is King: Gained deep practical insights into managing database locks and race conditions during high-demand live transactions.
User-Centric Security: Learned that safety features must be frictionless; security measures like PIN verification and GPS tracking only work if they integrate naturally into the user experience.
Infrastructure Resilience: Understood the importance of designing a fault-tolerant backend capable of handling network fluctuations common in local transit environments.
What's next for Reikeke Pilot Launch & Field Testing: Rolling out the platform in Yola to gather real-world feedback from drivers and commuters.
Advanced Safety Enhancements: Expanding security features to include emergency SOS triggers and automated trip-deviation alerts.
Ecosystem Expansion: Scaling the infrastructure model to secondary cities across the region to organize more fragmented local transit networks.
