Inspiration

COVID-19 has presented challenges to many different industries. One of the greatest challenges is the economic impact caused by the need to shutdown businesses. In the US alone approximately 7.5 million small/local businesses are at risk of permanently being shut down over the next five months and 3.5 million are at risk of shutting down within the next two months. An estimated 35.7 million people who are currently employed by small/local businesses are at risk for unemployment.

What it does

Reignite provides small/local businesses a simple gift card solution to help boost their income. By completing a quick form businesses are instantly provided with a landing page and plugin that can be added to their existing website. Using Marqeta a gift card is issued for the user that can be utilized on their existing checkout process.

How I built it

Reignite is primarily built with Node.js and Firebase. I made sure that the design was responsive so users could utilize the tool on the browser and mobile device. The card issuing utilizes Marqeta which allows for merchant locking. The email delivery of the gift card is powered by SendGrid. If users access the business landing page or gift card page via the browser they will notice a map of the businesses location built using Mapbox. Finally the custom plugin that users can add to their existing website is built via vanilla javascript.

Challenges I ran into

The biggest challenge was the onboarding process. I wanted to provide businesses with a solution that was as easy as possible. I had to reduce as much clutter as possible and focus on the critical information that was necessary for the business to provide to get started. Once that was accomplished I built a couple of different styles for the plugin that would appear on their websites.

I took advantage of the 'live chat' solution that many larger businesses utilize and adapted the same strategy for the gift card form popup.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Overall I'm proud of how much of the project I was able to complete, the user experience, and the design throughout the application.

What I learned

This was the first time I used Marqeta and I was able to go through a lot of the documentation to see the many different possibilities with the platform.

What's next for Reignite

I want to make some minor adjustments to the process. I would like for the user to send the gift cards via SMS as well. This will allow for SMS authentication when the user wants to retrieve the gift card details.
