Inspiration

I saw people keep throwing away food simply because they don't know what to make with it or don't know recipes. I wanted to make using them easier than throwing them out, which connects to SDG 12.3.

What it does

Enter several foods you have, and Use First suggests meals that fit. It recognizes common food names and small typos, gives short cooking steps, and can plan two meals without reusing the same ingredient.

How we built it

I built it with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The recipes and matching run in the browser. I used AI to help write with me since I'm learning, then checked and changed the results.

Challenges we ran into

People don't type ingredients neatly. They write things like 'half a tomato,' use different names, or misspell words. Getting useful matches from that took more tweaking than I expected.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

It works without an account and gives you a starting point for dinner using food you already have. I'm especially happy with the two-meal option.

What we learned

A simple idea takes a lot of small decisions to make useful. Testing ordinary inputs mattered more than adding extra features.

What's next for cooking recipes from leftovers/ Acodemic?

I want to add more regional foods and recipes, and let people enter rough amounts so the suggestions fit their kitchen better, and the cooking time they prefer.
