The Spark: Running a youth football league shouldn't mean spending your weekends wrestling with Excel. We saw volunteers burning out spending hours manually resorting teams and rebuilding fixtures because the FA's default system doesn't automatically update based on match results.
What it does: Regrade completely automates the headache. Paste in the latest results, and the system mathematically ranks teams, proposes balanced divisions, and instantly generates four weeks of clash-free fixtures. When you're done, it exports the schedule in the exact layout required by the FA's uploader.
How we built it: Sports scheduling needs 100% precision, so we avoided black-box AI. Instead, we built a lightning-fast deterministic matching algorithm. It tallies results, adjusts for division strength, and runs a week-by-week search to assign pitches without any repeats or double-booking.
The rough spots: Balancing strict constraints was tough—especially handling odd numbers of teams (which meant creating a rotating "bye" system) and dealing with real-world chaos like losing pitches to bad weather. We also had to build a seamless manual override: if a league secretary needs to manually move a team up or down, the algorithm instantly rebuilds the entire 4-week schedule around that single move.
