Inspiration
We were trying to think of ideas for the environment track. As we were looking through several news articles, we realized that very little attention was given to issues outside of recycling or energy conservation. Joanna told us about the topic of regenerative farming. We immediately knew that this is what we wanted to base our project on. Regenerative farming is such an important topic that is not spoken about enough and can impact the environment and people's lives. Regenerative farming practices can be used by anybody, even a city dweller.
What it does
Our website contains several web pages filled with information about regenerative farming. It also offers advice and features platforms for people to connect over.
How we built it
We used a platform called repl.it to program and design our website. The programming languages we used were HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Because we are novice programmers and this was our first hackathon, we had to use the knowledge gained from the workshops and our prior skills to build this website. Therefore, teamwork was also an essential part of the construction of this website.
Challenges we ran into
Since we had very little prior knowledge of the languages we used to build this website, we faced many obstacles. It was difficult to organize and format the text, buttons, and images. Often, new text would appear at the side of the existing text instead of going directly below it. When we were programming with CSS, code would often apply to parts of the text that we didn't want it to apply to. The behavior of the images was very different from the behavior of the text, so we found it very difficult to center and move the images. Since we did not have any knowledge of JavaScript, it was very difficult to program the buttons as well. Thankfully, with the help of teamwork, we were able to pick up the necessary knowledge we needed and program the buttons.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our ability to wrap up a large project in less than two days. Since we had a limited amount of time and knowledge, we had to work very hard to finish it in time. We are also very proud that we were able to overcome the hurdles and challenges we faced. If it weren't for our excellent teamwork, we wouldn't have been able to accomplish all of this. Our greatest accomplishment was a completed and fully functional website with multiple pages.
What we learned
We learned the basics of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. We also learned how important teamwork and collaboration is.
What's next for Regenerative Farming Website
We plan on improving the design and aesthetics of our website. We want to improve the user interface and provide more user interactions. We hope to add more information and research about regenerative farming, as well as other important topics pertaining to the environment.
