Inspiration

I found myself torn between updating Regal Boxing and Regal Baseball Simulator. But once I dove into the animations for both projects, the boxing mechanics immediately clicked—there's something incredibly satisfying about how they feel. Since Regal Boxing has been my biggest success to date, the choice became clear. Mobile players especially love spending time in Regal Boxing, so it felt natural to give them more engaging content. I drew inspiration from classic boxing games like Fight Night, Knockout Kings, and Ready 2 Rumble—titles that really nailed the visceral feel of the sport. The upgrade was the obvious move, and I'm excited to see how players respond to the enhanced experience.

What it does

The Regal Boxing mobile update brings the fight directly to your fingertips—mobile players can now step into the ring and throw punches against each other. This update introduces a comprehensive progression system that tracks player success through win-based rankings. As fighters climb the ranks, they unlock exclusive rewards including special gloves and gameplay boosts that enhance their boxing experience. This creates a meaningful sense of advancement and gives players tangible goals to work toward with each match. There are also 2 new Regal Championship Belts that players will be able to compete for, one for tournament play and one for league play.

How we built it

A diverse toolkit powered this update: Blender, Photoshop, Substance Painter, Canva, ChatGPT, Cursor, and Llama each played crucial roles in bringing the vision to life. While Regal Boxing's foundation was solid—with a proven core game loop already working smoothly in VR—this mobile expansion opened up exciting new possibilities.

The breakthrough came when we gained access to proper animations. This was transformative, allowing me to seamlessly integrate dynamic movement into the main UI and create a more immersive experience. I also expanded the world architecture to include a dedicated ring specifically designed for mobile combat.

Once the core framework was in place, hardywest stepped in to elevate everything further. He restructured the underlying systems, implemented new functionality, and optimized both the code base and UI elements for peak performance.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was time. I had to travel for work during this time to a country where Horizon Worlds wasn't available, so I lost about a week and a half of time to work on it. It feels rushed, but I think we made good progress on it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I’m most proud of how the project came out. It looks like an entirely different game, something you would not see in Horizon Worlds. I think this is the first boxing game of its kind where you can actually have a PVP style matchup from your mobile phone.

What we learned

We were really able to push the limit of what we thought we could do in Horizon. A lot of discoveries started with the words, I wonder if... After a lot of research, we learned how to have more control over the camera. We also were able to get familiar with the new animation features, which opened up a new world of possibilities for future projects.

What's next for Regal Boxing (Boxing League)

I’m going to add a celebration station where the players can purchase different celebrations to activate when they win their matches. Right now, there is a pool of celebrations that will play randomly when the player celebrates at the end of the match.

I’m going to add IWPs that will increase player speed and stamina. I’ll also add combination packages that will allow the player to throw different punch combinations.

I'm going to integrate a queue system to where mobile players will be able to press a button to be added to a queue to fight.

I'm going to integrate a main game camera where mobile spectators can view the same camera as the players in the ring.

I’ve made 2 new mobile championship belts where the players will be able to compete to become Regal champions. I will host tournaments and do monthly challenges.

I’m going to integrate the auxiliary Regal Boxing worlds into this one to where players can earn speed boosts, stamina boosts, and combination packages. I’m going to integrate an aura system to where players and earn unique celebrations by gaining points.
