Inspiration
We all have heard how we easy it becomes to get a good job after getting a referral but we are not that good at networking and socialising, we have the skills to get that referral but since we don’t know anyone it becomes really hard. A lot of people at FAANG companies have referrals but they can’t find the right people to give it to. Through refUp, we are basically bridging the gap between socially awkward coders looking for referrals and employees looking to maximise their chances to get the referral bonus.
What it does
An employee can list out their details (Company Name, their position) and the skills they are looking for in a person they want to give their referral to. Then any one looking for a referral can submit their resume to that person. Let’s say 110 resumes get submitted to get a referral from a person working at Google. Our machine learning algorithms would find the best 10 resumes out of those 110 and show it to the person giving out the referral. He/she can then choose the person they find best (this increases their chances of getting a referral bonus as well). This also makes sure that the referral goes to the best candidate.
How we built it
We had split the roles for each person and decided the tech stacks everyone would be working with. The machine learning model was built using Google Colab and NLP models. The Frontend framework used was React.js. The backend was made entirely using Flask and for the UI/UX Design we have used Figma, Canva and Adobe Illustrator.
Challenges we ran into
None of us knew backend development and building such a large scale project in no time with zero backend knowledge was a nightmare but after taking help from the mentors we were easily able to figure out how to make it.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We feel that our project could have a large scale impact on the job industry. We have also listed more than 25 open-source programs that students can participate in to promote the open-source culture. If this wouldn’t have been a hackathon, this would’ve taken at least 2 weeks but it makes us proud that we did it in less than 48 hours.
What we learned
We learned how to work as a team and moreover we became better coders.
What's next for refUp
We are planning to transform our product into a potential startup and make it an entire AI based job portal where people can apply to jobs with just a single click. We have also compiled a list of 200 companies which offer remote jobs so we would be releasing it on our website soon.
