Inspiration

Inspired by Project Olas and Gators For Refugee Medical Relief (GRMR at the University of Florida)

What it does

Connects refugees directly to resources in order for them to adjust to new circumstances/new places with educational course content, opportunities for remote employment, access to clean water, and to overcome food insecurity.

How we built it

Refugee Rescue was created based on open-source code from a GitHub repository (https://github.com/safak/youtube23/tree/react-mini), employing VSCODE, installations of yarn, three.js, and react. Furthermore, we also used resources such as public websites that allowed free downloads and usage of 3D models which we implemented in our project.

Challenges we ran into

A challenge we ran into during the brainstorming session was being able to combine our skillsets in order to have a project that reflected all of our abilities. Hence, narrowing down on what technical solution we could offer to a global problem was difficult. Other issues included accidentally using yarn and npm together, merging their libraries, and often, confusing our compiler.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are incredibly proud of our implementations of tiny details, such as cursor clicks, color palettes, margins, and the animated aspects of our project.

What we learned

We gained first-hand experience with the attentiveness and precision we needed to make calculated decisions, not to commit the same mistakes twice (such as using npm and yarn interchangeably), and a growth mindset where we continue to have ideas for improving the website.

What's next for Refugee Rescue

We're looking forward to creating a program within the website that allows refugees to connect with students in order to teach them their language through meaningful conversations, and a connection that bridges what would have been a border.
