Inspiration
We were inspired to create something to help refugees. The refugee crisis is looming large in the world, and we thought we would build something to help mitigate the crisis.
What it does
The app prototype connects refugees to resources such as shelter, refugee camps, healthcare, emergency contacts, educational resources, and job searching. It also functions as a social media to connect refugee communities. We wanted it to become a web application as well as a mobile application.
How we built it
We built our prototype on figma, and we coded a bit of the web application with React and a JavaScript library called mapbox. We hosted the web application on heroku.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into this weird JavaScript heap error when pushing our code to Heroku. Luckily, a quick google search helped us learn a bit more about JavaScript heaps and we found out that we just had to add a config variable to Heroku to get our application to work.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of building a beautiful prototype on figma! We're also proud that we got the interactive map up and running within the deadline.
What we learned
We learned a lot about what resources refugees need to be connected with. We also learned more about JavaScript heaps, a very fun topic!
What's next for RefSource
We hope to build the app out in react native and deploy it to the app store. We also hope to build out the fully functioning web application.
