Using NEAR to help authentic journalism flourish on-chain as opposed to the AI deepfakes that have been spreading as news. Using the power of community and NEAR Social with a brand new BOS frontend, to establish a link between humanitarian efforts and journalism in conflict zones.

Journalist's using Refound on NEAR are the evidence gatherers of truth and their photojournalism being minted with a time-stamp, date, and geo-location can be used by regulatory bodies to determine veracity and truth of news incidents and also be used to direct help and funding from regulatory bodies and organizations towards those impacted on the ground.

Inspiration

We were inspired by how to help the creative photojournalism communities in Ukraine and on the frontlines at conflict zones around the world. Refound 1.0 brought veracity to photo journalism in truth against AI deepfakes and now Refound 3.0 aims to bring humanity back to journalism.

The Problem:

Consumers of photojournalism from the frontlines and war zone journalists face:

  • Vicarious trauma and helplessness

  • Wanting to find more evidence: Humans need resolution…”what happened to them?”

  • With increasing war and climate change:

      How to help?
How to make a positive impact towards peace
Which organizations can I send money to on the ground?

Journalists are the "catalysts for peace." Refound 3.0 has the vision to be the solution to allow this growth of peace to begin.

The Solution - what Refound 3.0 offers:

Refound 3.0 ups the ante and brings a new level of interacting and consuming journalism, particularly photo journalism; the ability to support journalists to produce excellent content from the front lines and the ability to generate support for relief campaigns for areas and communities impacted by reporting from the frontlines of faultlines, including war and climate change. Tapping into the power of community:

  1. A whole new deployment on BOS and tapping into the community growth potential and dyanmics of NEAR Social.

  2. Fund journalism: funding the “evidence gatherers” and the catalysts of peace and sustainability by crowdfunding journalism

  3. Crowdfund relief: Contribute positively to areas impacted by conflict and climate change

What it does

The crowdfunding mechanism we developed allows for users to easily either raise funds for producing journalism or create a campaign to crowdfund relief in areas that are being impacted on the front lines.

Who: Wartime and conflict zone journalists, including freelance and citizen journalists. Reporting the truth should be as safe as possible with equitable compensation. The conflict zone reporting cycle today is not monetized adequately in accordance with the risk involved for journalists.

Why: When conflict zones are not covered by journalists, the parties involved in war can do damage with impunity. Journalists are needed to report the truth in order to catalyze peace, while being adequately compensated for the risk they are taking. News outlets publishing this reporting do not allow for adequate compensation and anonymity for their correspondents and freelance and citizen journalists and also do not direct people to ways to help. News outlets and the public also want verified and credible reporting.

How we built it:

We built it using BOS for the front end, Rust for the NEAR smart contracts, and IPFS and Web3.storage for data storage. Tech stack

  1. BOS integration
  2. BOS deployment for Refound
  3. web3*.Storage* on IPFS stores community source images
  4. NEAR smart contract written in Rust provides business logic & stores all the NFT collections metadata on-chainSDK
  5. Keypom for easy onboarding using linkdrop. Future feature will allow for user-interaction function call with user input args
  6. NEAR NEP 171 standard used for Refound NFTs Contract is able to: • Create new posts and allow licensing terms in the NFT metadata • View information of all the existent posts • Keypom onboarding o Refound NFT drops o Refound FT drops

We like NEAR's Keypom for our project because of the benefits offered: i) Refound also wants a cheap, customizable, and unique onboarding experience for users. ii) Refound doesn't want to expose full access keys in their backend servers. iii) Refound also wants a smooth UX with zero barrier to entry onboarding.
