Inspiration
The inspiration for Reflecta came from the realization that traditional surveys often fail to capture the voices of diverse and underrepresented communities, especially those with visual impairments or limited digital literacy. While communities increasingly rely on data-driven insights for decision-making, not all voices are equally represented in these data sets. We wanted to create a solution that would make it easier for anyone—regardless of economic status, education , race, age, or ability—to share their opinions and contribute to meaningful community decisions. This is how Reflecta, a voice-over survey app, was born.
What it Does
Reflecta is a voice-activated survey platform designed to capture authentic feedback from diverse communities. Here’s what it offers:
Targeted Sampling: Different surveys are tailored for various focus groups, such as mechanics, youth, or seniors, ensuring that each group’s specific concerns and perspectives are heard. The platform also uses snowball and stratified sampling to ensure inclusivity across economic statuses, education levels, disabilities, and more.
Multilingual Voice-Over Surveys: The app uses a chatbot that asks questions in both English and Spanish, with more languages to come. Participants can respond by speaking instead of typing, making it easy for people who are visually impaired, digitally illiterate, or prefer speaking. This helps ensure that more voices are heard from different communities.
AI-Powered Insights: Reflecta doesn't just collect data—it processes it. Our app uses AI and Natural Language Processing (NLP) algorithms to analyze responses in real time, generating insights that can help organizations and governments understand community sentiment, key concerns, and areas needing improvement.
Business Analytics Dashboard: The platform includes a comprehensive dashboard where decision-makers can view and interact with the collected data, track sentiment trends, and visualize common themes emerging from the surveys.
How We Built It
Reflecta was built using a combination of cutting-edge technologies:
Natural Language Processing (NLP): We incorporated NLP models like spaCy and TextBlob to process and analyze text responses. These models help in sentiment analysis, keyword extraction, and summarizing responses.
Voice Recognition: The app leverages voice-to-text services, such as Google Speech Recognition, to convert spoken responses into text, ensuring that voice data is easily captured and processed.
Mobile Development with Kotlin: Reflecta was developed using Kotlin, ensuring smooth and efficient performance on mobile devices. This makes the app more accessible and user-friendly for a broad range of participants on mobile platforms.
Incentive Program Integration: Through partnerships with well-known stores like Walmart and Walgreens, we built an integration that allows survey participants to redeem rewards after completing surveys, boosting participation rates.
AI-Driven Analytics: The heart of the platform is its AI engine, which applies machine learning algorithms to identify patterns, sentiments, and key insights from the collected responses.
Challenges We Ran Into
Building Reflecta has not been without its challenges:
Voice Accuracy: Capturing clear voice responses from participants in noisy environments or with various accents was a technical challenge that we worked hard to address through better speech recognition and audio preprocessing techniques.
Data Inclusivity: Ensuring that the platform accommodates the vast diversity of users—across languages, accents, and educational levels—required significant research and optimization, especially in the design of the chatbot interface and response analysis tools.
Community Engagement: Designing an incentive program that would resonate with different communities and convincing partners like Walmart to support the initiative required thoughtful negotiation and planning.
Anticipated Accomplishments
As Reflecta moves towards its launch, we anticipate several key accomplishments:
Enhanced Inclusivity and Accessibility: Reflecta will enable more people from underserved communities, including those who are visually impaired or digitally illiterate, to participate in important surveys. We aim to provide a voice for everyone.
Successful Integration of Voice Technology: We expect that Reflecta's voice-over feature will capture a wide range of speech patterns, accents, and dialects, allowing for richer, more diverse data collection.
Increased Participation through Incentives: By offering $10 coupons in partnership with stores like Walmart and Walgreens, we anticipate significantly higher participation rates than traditional survey methods.
AI-Powered Insights for Decision-Making: We look forward to helping community leaders, local governments, and organizations make data-driven decisions using Reflecta’s advanced AI algorithms, which will provide actionable insights from survey responses.
Empowering Communities: Reflecta will not only gather data but also provide tools to visualize and interpret it, enabling communities to understand and act on their own feedback through the Business Analytics Dashboard.
What We Learned
Throughout the development of Reflecta, we’ve learned several valuable lessons:
Importance of Accessibility: Creating a truly accessible platform means considering the needs of a wide range of users—those with disabilities, those unfamiliar with technology, and those who communicate better verbally.
Engaging Diverse Communities: Incentives and partnerships are crucial for encouraging participation. Building trust within communities, especially through well-known partners, helps make the survey process more appealing.
AI and Language Processing: While natural language processing can provide incredible insights, it must be fine-tuned to handle the nuances of human speech, especially when dealing with diverse groups.
What’s Next for Reflecta - Voice Over Survey App to Capture Community Voice
Looking ahead, we plan to expand Reflecta’s reach and capabilities: Multilingual Support:Adding more language options to make Reflecta accessible to non-English speakers and international communities.
Expanded Partnerships: We aim to partner with more local businesses, non-profits, and government organizations to increase Reflecta’s reach and utility.
More Focus Groups: As we grow, we plan to introduce more specialized surveys tailored to different communities, including senior citizens, people with disabilities, and rural populations.
Deeper Data Analytics: Our goal is to continue refining Reflecta’s AI and NLP models to provide even more detailed insights and predictive analytics based on community feedback.
Wider Adoption: Ultimately, we want Reflecta to be a go-to solution for any organization looking to capture the true voice of their community, leading to more informed, equitable decision-making processes.
