Inspiration
We realized that health is interconnected, but healthcare often isn't. When you get a headache, you think "neurologist," but it could be dental (TMJ) or even stress-related. Patients don't know which specialist to see or what to ask, leading to wasted time and missed diagnoses. We were inspired to build a tool that connects the dots for patients before they even book an appointment.
What it does
ReferralRight serves as a pre-appointment research partner. It takes a patient's health concern and investigates it from multiple medical specialties at once—like medical, dental, and nutritional. The AI synthesizes its findings from authoritative sources into a clear, patient-friendly summary and, most importantly, generates a list of smart, specific questions to ask each type of doctor. We don't diagnose; we help you prepare for a better conversation with your provider.
How we built it
We built a multi-agent system using Mastra for AI orchestration, allowing us to create specialized research agents for different medical domains. To ensure our AI is performing correctly and to debug its complex research processes, we've integrated Weave by Weights & Biases for end-to-end tracing and evaluation. Finally, to integrate the communication between the AI agents and the user, we used CopilotKit.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenge wasn't providing information, but providing it safely. We had to meticulously design our system, never to give medical advice, which is a fine line to walk. Another hurdle was distilling dense, complex medical literature from multiple fields into summaries that are clear, actionable, and—most importantly—not scary for the patient. Lastly, another challenge was integrating different tools that use agents, since they use different frameworks for their integration.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're most proud of creating a tool that empowers patients instead of frightening them. Our multi-specialty approach is a game-changer, revealing connections that "Dr. Google" would miss. Shifting the focus from just a "symptom checker" to a "conversation prep tool" is our biggest accomplishment, as it changes the dynamic between patient and doctor for the better.
What we learned
We know from medical practitioners that informed patients get better care. When a patient walks into an appointment prepared with the right questions, it leads to a more efficient and effective consultation. We learned that we're not replacing doctors; we're creating better partners for them by improving patient health literacy.
What's next for us
Our vision is to build the most comprehensive pre-appointment research platform in healthcare. The next step is to expand our research agents beyond medical and dental into crucial areas like nutrition, mental health, and alternative medicine. We also plan to launch pilot programs with healthcare systems to measure the impact on appointment efficiency and patient satisfaction scores.
