Inspiration
Being an SUTD freshmore, we have all enjoyed our time of living independently at school. However, not all are fortunate enough to be able to live independently through no fault of their own. Our hearing-impaired friend has to sleep at home so that her parents can wake her up because a typical sounding alarm would not wake her up. From her story, we realised how inaccessible it is for the hearing-impaired to use an alarm to wake up, which we so easily take for granted.
What our solution does
Our solution is designed to work in multiple stages aiming to help our target audience wake up. First, to simulate the natural shine of the morning sun, in an attempt to wake the user. Second, if the user still does not wake up, we would resort to using a model hand to prod the user awake.
How we built it
We coded an arduino and connected a few modules to it, namely the real-time clock module 2, servo motor, LED matrix, and LED display. We also 3d-printed a hand model, and attached it using DIY tools like string and tape.
Challenges we ran into
The programming of the arduino, which is based off the C++ language. Since we did not have any prior knowledge on it, there were many times when our code did not run as intended.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We made a working prototype! That also works as intended.
What we learned
We learnt that while we may not have the expertise in the areas/problems we face, as long as we are determined enough to keep trying then we are able to solve the problem.
What's next for Reeses In Pieces
With more time on our hand, we can spend more time to learn more about the arduino language and modifying our prototype to make it more viable and more realistic.
