Inspiration

I (Cannon Kissane) have always suffered from poor posture in my life. At home, it was my mom who would constantly serve as my reminder to stop slouching and sit up straight. In college, with nobody to remind me, and personal resistance to wearing a strap, my bad posture is left unchecked. Similarly, my friend has scoliosis and needs to constantly maintain good posture.

Each of us has someone in our lives who suffers from bad posture. Bad posture leads to back pain and an array of other health issues.

In the digital age, poor posture has emerged as a widespread issue, with people spending extended periods hunched over computers and phones. Current solutions are limited and restricted. Harnesses are uncomfortable to wear. While stand-up desks are immobile. With emerging technology, we don't have to constrain ourselves. Augmented Reality is a unique opportunity to tackle bad posture with gamification, real-time personal feedback, community engagement, and exciting visuals.

What it does

In today's digital age, poor posture is widespread. Traditional fixes like harnesses and stand-up desks fall short due to discomfort and immobility. Enter ReelXD, a holistic solution leveraging technology. It incentivizes good posture through positive reinforcement, community engagement, and personalized feedback. Catch fishes, grow your own virtual aquarium or release your catches to join the growing community's fishes.

How we built it

ReelXR is a well-fleshed-out prototype we build out solely in ShapesXR. Using the drawing, 3D assets, interactions, and holonotes we brought our idea to life!

Challenges we ran into

  • The initial learning curve for ShapesXR was steep, but by Day #2 we got it down.
  • Organizing all our ideas into a prototype that we can start to build
  • Narrating some of the scenes with voice-over

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Feature packing
  • Fully prototyped and storyboarded the application in 3D
  • Once we got into 3D, we started to visualize our initial concept and started prototyping
  • We created a solution that offers an alternative to wearable strap posture correction.

What we learned

  • Learned how to prototype in ShapesXR and Figma
  • Learned how to work as a team to complete a prototype for an AR app
  • Learned how to create a game design document from scratch
  • Learned how to wireframe a storyboard
  • Learned to work with shared productivity applications as a notion to complete the tasks

What's next for ReelXR - Catch Fish By Having Good Posture

After this hackathon, we plan to build a more complete model in Unity, adding more materials, textures, and details to maximize immersion and quality. We also plan to code this program’s interactions and bring it to life for users. In addition to this specific project, the success of this application opens up boundless opportunities to revolutionize how we tackle many other wellness challenges in our daily lives. We imagine extending this concept to other aspects of well-being; for example, prototyping exercise modules into a heroic journey, engaged reminders to drink more water, or mindfulness into a calming, scenic escape.
