Inspiration
The inspiration behind Reefmap stems from the urgent need to address the global decline of coral reefs. Coral reefs are valuable and fragile ecosystems that are vital for marine biodiversity and provide numerous benefits to humans, such as coastal protection and tourism. However, due to factors like climate change, pollution, and overfishing, coral reefs are facing significant threats and are in danger of disappearing.
What it does
Coral Reef Location: It allows users to locate coral reefs around the world. Through interactive maps and geolocation features, users can explore different areas and identify the presence of coral reefs.
Information and Data: Reefmap provides users with valuable information and data about coral reefs. This includes details about the health and condition of the reefs, species diversity, and ecological threats they face. The platform aggregates data from various sources, including datasets and other online resources.
How we built it
We build it using ReactJS, nodeJS, expressJS, mongoDB atlas, and Python.
Challenges we ran into
Gathering and integrating data from diverse sources posed challenges related to data compatibility, quality control, and data-sharing agreements. Moreover, building a platform that is sustainable in the long term and scalable to accommodate increasing user demand presented challenges related to infrastructure, funding, and resource allocation.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- We are proud to successfully launch the Reefmap platform, making it accessible to users worldwide and providing them with valuable information about coral reefs.
- Empowering users with the knowledge to make informed decisions and take action.
What we learned
We learned the essence of designing a platform that is user-friendly and accessible to individuals with varying levels of technical expertise is essential for engagement and adoption. Also under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 8, 9, 13, 14, and 17 as provided by the United Nations (UN), we are fulfilling all the requirements for making a positive impact.
What's next for Reefmap
Strengthening partnerships with conservation organizations, research institutions, and government agencies to leverage expertise, share resources, and promote collective coral reef conservation efforts.
Moreover, currently, we are also developing a framework for people where they can leverage virtual environments like Metaverse to explore and learn about coral reefs. This will surely give them a wider perspective on the coral reefs actually work.
