Inspiration

The creation of our website aiming to identify coral bleaching was inspired by several factors. Firstly, the alarming rate at which coral reefs around the world are being affected by bleaching events served as a strong motivation. The devastating impact of coral bleaching on marine ecosystems and the urgent need for conservation efforts became apparent, fueling our desire to contribute to raising awareness about this issue. We were also inspired by the power of visual storytelling and The ability of websites to effectively convey information and engage audiences. By leveraging Canva's design tools, we aimed to create a visually compelling platform that would capture the attention of visitors and effectively communicate the importance of coral reef preservation. Furthermore, the desire to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and public understanding played a significant role in our inspiration. We aimed to present complex scientific concepts in a simplified and accessible manner, making it easier for individuals from various backgrounds to grasp the significance of coral bleaching and the actions necessary to protect these fragile ecosystems.

Overall, our inspiration stemmed from the urgent need to address coral bleaching, the power of visual communication, the importance of scientific outreach, and the global environmental consciousness. By combining these elements, we aimed to create a website that educates, inspires, and mobilizes individuals to protect our invaluable coral reef ecosystems.

What it does

we created a website using Canva with the aim of identifying coral bleaching. The website serves as an informative platform to raise awareness about coral bleaching. It includes sections such as an introduction to coral bleaching, information about the factors contributing to coral bleaching, real-life examples and case studies, and practical tips on how individuals can contribute to coral reef conservation.

Through the website, we strive to educate visitors about the importance of coral reefs, the devastating effects of coral bleaching, and the urgent need for action. The design of the website is visually appealing, incorporating images and engaging users to enhance their learning experience

Furthermore, the website features a user-friendly interface that allows visitors to navigate through the content seamlessly. It is optimized for both desktop and mobile devices to ensure accessibility for a wide range of users. We also integrated social media sharing buttons, enabling users to spread awareness about coral bleaching through their own networks and adding our emails for any further questions.

How we built it

We built ‘ReefGuardians’ using canva, and we collected data from databases as data.gov and catalog.data.gov. After collecting the datasets, we cleaned, sorted and organized them using python, then we visualized them using looker studio. We gathered information regarding coral bleaching from several websites and journals as www.epa.gov and AIMC (Australian Institute Of Marine Science).

Challenges we ran into

One of the challenges we encountered was lack of data because coral bleaching is not widely recognized. After conducting extensive searches in Google Scholar and other databases, we were able to conduct few datasets. Another challenge we faced was that we started working on the website on August 26, and time was a major barrier for us because we didn't have enough time to use HTML to develop the website.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We feel honored that we were able to create a website that presents each side of the coral bleaching issue and raises awareness of it. In addition, we take pride in the fact that despite the lack of data, we were still able to gather some and demonstrate the seriousness of the issue. Finally, we are happy with how quickly we finished the job and how much effort we put into it.

What we learned?

We encountered a lot of knowledge about coral bleaching, how severe is it, and its long-term effects. Also, we learned about coral reefs, and that they are considered a great support for the economy, and environment. Furthermore, we learned how necessary and important volunteering is, and that a big journey of saving coral reefs starts from a single step of a volunteer! Finally, after the experience of creating a website and discussing an important problem, we become comfortable in our developing, researching, presenting, and brainstorming skills!

What's next for ReefGuardians?

The next step is to develop the site, which we were unable to develop due to time constraints. Furthermore, we aim to make the website more interactive, attract more people, and to convey the topic in an easier and better manner. In the future, we will gather donations from individuals and distribute them to institutions that care about the environment. We believe that our further modifications to the website will aid in the preservation of the marine environment. Finally, we will also establish a volunteer organization with the goal of conserving and cleaning beaches and marine life in our hometown, Egypt, as well as teaching people about the issue.
