Recently, Bendigo and Adelaide Bank released redy; a mobile based payment system where your smartphone is used to purchase goods or services from redy businesses.
redy is more than a just a way to pay. For redy shoppers, redy is an app. You simply download it to your smartphone, register, and start spending. Each time you buy with redy, rewards (‘Creds’) are earned which can be redeemed for your own use within the redy network or you can donate them to community projects or charities that matter to you.
redy is a way to connect users (shoppers) and businesses to causes that are important to them, and enables the two parties to actively support and contribute to these causes. By simply making a payment in redy, the redy shopper is empowered to make a difference.
The redy mission is to provide innovative ways to build social and economic prosperity through connection of consumers and business to the communities and causes that matter to them.
The redy Shopper + Gear 2 app was developed as an extension of the redy Android application to provide shoppers with an innovative world-first; the ability to make a payment at a store using a wearable device.
By incorporating the Samsung Accessory and Samsung Mobile API's, the redy Shopper + Gear 2 app allows shoppers to log in to their redy Shopper account with a four digit PIN, scan a QR code using the Gear 2 camera, and accept a purchase offer from a merchant while their phone is in their pocket!
In the host Android app, the customer’s PIN is silently coupled with an asynchronous one time pin validated by a leading third party – securing the app to the consumer.
The shopper is able to view their redy dollars balance and change which linked payment method is used to complete the transaction. A receipt is stored in the Android host app once the transaction is completed successfully.
The Gear 2 consumer app has been developed natively in Tizen using the Samsung Gear Dev Tool, and incorporates javascript, jQuery, HTML5 and css to present a user friendly interface to act as a natural extension of the host Android app.
The Gear 2 app utilises the Samsung secure communication encryption to ensure that all data maintains its integrity. The app has undergone stringent internal and third party security testing to ensure that no vulnerabilities exist.
The host device will communicate with the Gear 2 app to gracefully ensure that the app is open on only one device at a time. This is important in ensuring that an offer is only scanned once, and to grant the host Android app ‘sovereignty’ as the primary redy Shopper tool.
The redy Shopper + Gear 2 app will monitor the camera stream and recognise and decode QR data locally, before sending the result to be processed by the host Android app. All other tasks are handled by the host Android app and do not require intense computations from the Gear 2 device.
Bendigo and Adelaide bank are excited about the future of payments and how wearable technology can drive innovations in this field.
