Idea
Halving the time between Hospitals and Households in Remote Areas
Problem Statement
In India and across the globe , Accessibility to Healthcare is one big problem due to widespread population and large gaps between the hospitals and the villages/remote areas. The doctor-to-population ratio in India is 1:2148 and under this gap between hospitals and villages this problem alone takes a lot of lives each year due to either the Ambulance arriving late or the patient dying midway to the hospital . In the US, Since 2010, 99 rural have closed, leaving residents in isolated communities without access to proper medical or emergency room care. Ambulances arriving late to the patients has also been a reason for deaths in many cases and due to area being remote , it also lacks temporary life support systems.
How we built it
The Idea is based upon reducing the duration of the round trip, the ambulance takes in emergency cases. The medium of operation should be a mobile application that is used between the Hospital’s Emergency Department and all the surrounding villages/towns/households. As soon as there is emergency requirement from a person living in some remote area this model can be used as the mobile app would connect with the ambulance coming from the opposite direction and coordinate with it such that the patient can be transported on the sidecar as much as it can till it reaches the point where it meets the ambulance on the route ,midway. For eg if a hospital gets a call from a person located 50 miles away in a remote village (which is common in many countries ) then for the ambulance to reach to the patient and bring him back makes the total distance to be covered as 100 miles and total time to be 100 minutes(approx.) . We aim to reduce this into half by designing a sidecar for patient transportation and coordinating with ambulance. location.
The aim is to reduce this distance and time into half with the help of a cheaper and more widely available solution to carry the patients since time is very valuable in times of emergencies and lead to change in results. Motorbikes are a very common , cheaper and widely available transport used in African and Asian countries as a mode to transport but what it lacks is the design to carry a patient in emergency. The mobile app would be equipped with Google Maps and GPS functionality to coordinate with the ambulance driver. It is still possible is to build a low cost detachable sidecar which can fit onto any kind of motorbike and use that sidecar for the transport of the patient. This transport since lacks the basic features of an ambulance ,as soon as the bike-sidecar meets the ambulance , the patient can be transferred onto it. Modern day ambulance are equipped with all the life support systems and is the reason that taking the patient to exactly mid-way of the whole route is what can give us significant results .
