Redreemer

Inspiration

Every financial app assumes you have a smartphone, email, and a bank account. 582,000 homeless Americans and 600,000 people released from prison each year have none of that. Financial exclusion is a design problem; so we redesigned it.

What it does

Redreemer lets anyone text a single phone number from any phone; even a flip phone get real local resources, real phone numbers, and a guided 8-step ladder from survival to financial independence. It intercepts predatory lenders in real time, checks benefits eligibility, finds fair-chance employers, and celebrates every milestone with a human voice message.

How we built it

Node.js + React + Supabase backend, Twilio for SMS, Gemini 2.5 Flash for AI responses, and ElevenLabs for voice milestone clips. Every incoming text runs through a 20-layer detection pipeline before AI ever responds, with Auth0 protecting the caseworker dashboard and Vercel handling deployment.

Challenges we ran into

Getting the detection pipeline sequencing right was critical; a crisis message that also mentions a job keyword must hit the suicide layer before the employer layer. Calibrating Gemini's tone was equally hard; every response goes to someone in a genuinely difficult situation, and the line between helpful and patronizing is razor thin.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We built the first SMS platform to intercept predatory lenders in real time ; 23 scam attempts blocked so far. We're also proud of delivering behavioral finance psychology via flip phone, and a caseworker risk-scoring system that tells social workers who needs help before they disappear entirely

What we learned

Trust is the hardest design problem in financial inclusion, not the technology. Every decision has to earn it incrementally: plain language, no judgment, free forever, and resources that are actually local, accurate, and actionable.

What's next for Redreemer

Expand the local resource database beyond Phoenix to cover major metros nationwide. Partner directly with shelters and reentry organizations to integrate Redreemer into day-one intake workflows. Pursue nonprofit status and CDFI partnerships to keep it free forever.
