Inspiration

The inspiration for RedPul+ve stems from a deeply personal and moving experience: witnessing the daily struggle of a young thalassemia patient. Despite coming from a family with the financial means and medical coverage to secure regular blood transfusions, her life was a constant cycle of hospital visits, pain, and uncertainty.

This observation sparked a critical question: If a patient with resources faces such hardship, what is the fate of the millions who lack this support?

India carries one of the world's largest burdens of thalassemia, with an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 babies born with the condition each year. The situation is particularly acute in our home state of West Bengal, which has one of the highest carrier rates in the country. This silent epidemic leaves countless patients and their families navigating a fragmented and overburdened healthcare system.

RedPul+ve was born from the conviction that technology could bridge this critical gap, creating a lifeline that connects patients, donors, and hospitals in a seamless, efficient, and life-saving ecosystem.

What it does

RedPul+ve is a comprehensive mobile application designed to serve as a centralized platform for thalassemia management and blood donation. It provides distinct, user-friendly interfaces for both patients and donors.

For Patients:

  • AI-Powered Thalassemia Assessment
Users input symptoms and blood test results (RBC, HbA, HbA2, HbF), which are analyzed by our AI model for a preliminary thalassemia risk score.

  • Health Status Categorization
Based on assessment, patients are grouped into one of four levels:

    1. Fit – No immediate concerns.
    2. Check-Up Required – Recommend medical consultation.
    3. Treatment Required – High risk, urgent care needed.
    4. Extreme Condition – Emergency alert triggered.
  • Automated Hospital Alerts
In "Extreme Condition" cases, an AI summary and health report are auto-emailed to nearby partner hospitals.

  • Support Chatbot
Offers a safe space to ask questions, express concerns, and get emotional and informational support.

For Donors:

  • Seamless Registration
Quick signup with blood type and contact details.

  • Health Verification
Guides donors to the nearest partner labs/hospitals for fitness screening.

  • Connecting with Need
Fit donors are notified of urgent local requests and can schedule donations directly with hospitals.

How we built it

We chose a modern, scalable tech stack tailored for real-time health communication and sensitive data handling:

  • Frontend (Mobile App): Kotlin for high-performance native Android.
  • Frontend (Web): React for responsive login/signup portals.
  • Backend: FastAPI for real-time alerts and data processing.
  • AI & Data Processing: Python with Scikit-learn and TensorFlow for diagnosis and health report generation.
  • Database: MySQL for structured user data and hospital records.
  • Version Control: Bitbucket for collaborative development.
  • Data Visualization: Power BI for admin dashboards (blood supply, donors, demographics).

Challenges we ran into

Building RedPul+ve came with its fair share of roadblocks:

  1. Technological Complexity
Integrating Kotlin, React, FastAPI, and AI tools seamlessly across platforms required careful coordination and planning.

  2. Big Data Management
Managing large-scale sensitive health data securely while ensuring performance and scalability was a major challenge.

  3. Hospital Onboarding
Partnering with hospitals involved navigating bureaucratic hurdles, addressing data privacy concerns, and aligning technical protocols.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. A Unified Ecosystem
Created a holistic platform connecting patients, donors, and hospitals under one digital roof.

  2. AI Diagnostic Aid
Successfully developed an AI model for risk-level prediction and automated medical summaries.

  3. Empowering Users
Enabled both patients and donors to take proactive roles in saving lives through a transparent and impactful system.

What we learned

This project offered many lessons beyond just technical growth:

  • Full-Stack Integration
Gained deep experience in building and connecting full-stack systems across mobile, web, and backend APIs.

  • Data Privacy Matters
Learned the critical importance of secure healthcare data handling and compliance with ethical standards.

  • Stakeholder Management
Realized that tech isn't enough — trust, partnerships, and institutional collaboration are key for success in health-tech.

What's next for RedPul+ve

We have a clear and exciting roadmap to continue evolving the platform:

  1. Expand to Other Blood Disorders
Add support for sickle cell anemia, hemophilia, etc.

  2. iOS Application
Build and launch a native iOS version to increase accessibility.

  3. Wearable Device Integration
Integrate with smartwatches and health trackers for real-time vitals monitoring and alerts.

  4. National Expansion
Scale hospital partnerships from West Bengal to a pan-India level, building a national digital blood donation and management system.
